Painting Rims --- Step by Step
Well today my brother and I painted his rims on the Prelude and they came out pretty good.
I will take you guys step by step and some of the stuff you guys need . I will also tell you guys what else you could of done to make it look even better. THINGS YOU NEED ---------------------- 1) A jack and 4 or 2 stands 2) a drill , or 2 (it will only make life better) 3) 3M Light rust and paint remover pad x2 ( i noticed a pad will last you for 2 rims) make sure you can attach it to you drill 4) A hard metal brush that you and attach to your drill 5)Dupli- Color rim paint , you can use any brand paint , but make sure its good for high tempatures , this one was made for rims , we used black , we used a can for 2 rims , but this will depand on how many coats you did , 2 cost for 2 rims 5)Tape 6) Knife 7) Paper towels 8) 24 of any brand beer 9) Sunny day 10) Some one to keep you company and help you out Some pics of some of the pads and paints ![]() ![]() Step One ------------- First you need to take off the rim and tire off your car , jack up ur car and take off all four or just the front/ back , dosnt matter , all 4 wheels will be off and on in the end. Once you have the wheel(s) off take your sanding pads and ur wire brush pad and put them on and u can start sanding away, (We had a dewalt drill on a cord for the 3M pad and a jobmate cordless for thr wire brush). Sand off as much and you can with the 3M brush , you dont need to get down to the metal , just enought so its smooth and no clear coat is showing. If you come upon a place that you cant just the get smooth slowy with the metal brush take the paint off, dont press to hard because you can damage the rim , after you use the metal sand it off with the 3M pad, do this on this spot intill its nice and smooth. If you cant get into ever little spot dont worry we didnt so it and it turned out fine , but if you want you can take sand paper nothing less then 320 grid and sand it off. Do this for all the rims , AVOID THE TIRE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ![]() Step Two -------------- Once you have all or just one rim sanded just take water and hose it off well , you can use soap and clean them if you want . After your done use paper towels to speed up the drying, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE LITTLE SPOT BETWEEN YOUR TIRE AND THE RIM. When its dry avoid touching it with clean or dirty hands , grease and paint dont mix well , the paint wont stick on the rime perfectly. Now you can get tape and tape up ur rime try to get as close as you can to the rim, there is a lille grove between the tire and the rim , stick tape in there so you can paint the little lip around thr rim. once you are done taping the rim find a dust free area to paint, also make sure there isnt much wind. ![]() Step Three -------------- Now you are ready to paint , make sure you read the direction on the can how to use , some are qucik dry others are not. Try to over the rim in a thin coat first dont worry about the little hard to reach areas right now , if you can get in there go ahead. After you are done the first coat wait 30- One hours time for a second , now try to get to each hole and little place, make this coat a nice even coat. and make sure you done forget any spots. Wait another 30 to One hours time and come back and touch up and little spots that look odd or need more paint. and let them rest for good. Make sure you leave them to dry long enough before you handle them. It is up to you if you want a clear coat or not , we didnt use one. Not full finshed left the lip unpainted ![]() Step Four ------------- When u are 110% sure it is dry remove the tape and slap the rim back on ur car. When its done ![]() Me looking horny ![]() And not sure where to sticky this but i think it should Thanks ,and Your Welcome

ya we did use cardboard and suff in around the rim....but you cant paint the lip around nicely , with tape you can get into more areas better....we have tryd alot of things and tet 14 pads to see which one works the best...this is the bestway that we came up with to paint rims.

That looks pretty good man! Does the paint last a long time? Can it be scraped off easily? That might be an idea for my rims, now that i've seen at least 5 cars with rims like mine since summer started

its actually MUCH EASIER to let all the air out of the tires first before using tape.. it pulls back the sidewall quite a bit..
http://speedoptions.com/articles/4609/ there are a few other problems,
