Question self dimming mirror

Does anyone have the self-dimming rear view mirror on their 05 Tacoma? Is it worth the additional cost?

Also, does anyone have the Toyota color keyed running boards on their truck? Do you like?

I put one in from a 2005 Avalon. That one has HomeLink, which I was more interested in than autodimming. It was easy to install. 3 wires in the overhead panel were used. I have a access cab Sport, and used the temp/compass wires.

10 minutes tops!

I also got used to the autodimmer, which is cool!!!

Whofarted (hahahaha), where did you get your mirror? Like you, I want the Homelink, but don't want to pay the dealer 200 & something bux for a mirror.

This place has the full selection of Gentex mirrors, though the prices are not the best.

Do you already have the overheard compass/temp display? If so, the auto dimming feature in itself is not worth the upgrade, at least in my view. But if, like me, you didn't have those features, then an auto dimming with compass and temp display is a nice upgrade. In fact, I have no idea why Toyota went with the overhead console display when the mirror can display the same info without the separate unit.

I started a long thread on this on Tundra Solutions.

I believe the self-dimming mirrors only come on the DC Long Beds for some reason.

As far as the Toyota running boards, I believe they only come in black- but I'd be interested if they did come colored keyed. Anyone have any pics?

I got mine from the dealer. I have a great reporte with them, and got a 20% discount!

Hoofhearted, what wires did you connect to where? I am interested in doing this, but would like to take some of the guess work out. How about some simple instructions for us wannabee electricians? BTW, does your Compass/Temp still work fine? Did you need another mounting bracket for the new mirror or were you able to use the existing one?

I userd the wires going to the overhead console. The maplight (green / white i think) was
used for the constant power (B+). The wires to the compass / temp gage are switched, and I used them for the non constant power connections. The instructions in the box were for the Avalon, and show which wire needed B+. The mount lug is the same. DONT use the box instructions for removing the old mirror!!! Use a small screwdriver and release the clip underneath the base.

By the way, Gentex makes the mirrors for Toyota, and their site is great for programming the HomeLink.

Good luck,

Hoof!?!

Hey scroyal I have the self dimming miror with the home link system and I love it. It is much more easier having the homelink than having to carry a remote to get into my apartment gate. It also works for my parents garage door and my uncles garage door. Also the dimming part works great on the interstate when you have an 18 wheeler behind you or a vehicle with brights on. It is really a great option to have plus the regular miror looks cheap this one looks very classy. I got mine from the factory and I think it was about 240 dollars extra but it is well worth it. For the person who posted about only thinks it comes on dc long bed that is wrong because I have the dc sb and it was an option for my truck
