Sport Hood scoop modification

I just took the hood scoop insert off of the hood to see how it was made and see if I could do anything with it. To take it off you just unscrew the five 10mm nuts and one phillips screw. You might want to use a magnetic driver when taking out the phillips screw, so that the screw doesn't fall down into the frame of the hood. The metal screen and the plastic piece behind it are sandwiched together and held to the fiberglass by 3 rivets. You can drill out these rivets and then you would be able to separate all the pieces and modify them how you want. My truck kind of has a straight black theme going on so I decided not to modify it (for now). But if I had a model with the chrome grill and stuff, I would probably take the screen out and paint it chrome to match. I think that would look pretty cool. Or it would be cool if you have a bright colored truck and painted the screen the same color as your truck. Or you could leave the screen black, but paint the plastic piece behind it. Or if you're good with a drill or a Dremmel tool you could cut out some of the plastic and make air actually flow through the scoop.

It would be pretty cool if some company made a billet aluminum screen to match a billet aluminum grill.

If my truck wasn't all black I would certainly do a little modding to the scoop. Just thought you guys might want to know what can be done with the scoop.

Any pics of the scoop after youi modified it. Too bad there isn't a "ram air" type kit to actually utilize the hoodscoop with the stock airbox.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. It would be real easy to drill some holes in the plastic and insert some LEDs through the back of the holes. It might be cool, and then again it could be a little to "ricer" for me. Or that would be crazy if I could find a LED bar that goes back and forth like the one on "Kitt" from Night Rider. Sweeeeet

If you'll read the post you'll see that I didn't do any mods to the scoop. I just took it apart and thought about it. For right now I like my truck all black. But if I had a red, blue or silver Taco then I would certainly paint the screen mesh or do something like that.

Anyone have a scoop they wanna get rid of? I work in a composites shop, and could take a mold off of it and make carbon fiber ones. If anyone is interested.

Yeah, that would be pretty cool. I would let you use mine if I lived in Wisconsin.

I read your post...
I guess my defin. of "modified" was taking it apart, I just wanted to see some pics to see if the intake area was bigger with the insert removed. I coulnd't tell from the pics on your site if that was after you took the scoop apart.

Yeah, it's bigger, but it doesn't look good without the painted fiberglass insert. You can see the support frame of the hood. I never took any pics of the hood without the scoop installed. But it would probably look allright if you took out the black plastic piece behind the screen.

How complex of shapes can you mold? Like could you mold a dash kit? That would be sweet.
