I picked up an iPod2Car today from a local retailer along with the additional harness required according to Peripheral (part #PXHTY1). I got home, got everything off just fine and everything was going great until I noticed that the harness didn't fit my head unit. I flipped through the manual and saw that some Toyotas require an additional harness to make the PXHTY1 work. The additional harness is PXHTY2. I went back to the shop and they had the harness in stock and I came back and got everything put in with no problem. From my conversations with the guy at the shop, we deduced that since I had the 6-disc changer, I needed the additional harness, and that if I didn't have the changer, I wouldn't have needed the second harness.
So in short, if you have an '05 Tacoma with the 6-disc in dash changer and you're considering the iPod2Car, make sure you that purchase the actual iPod2Car unit itself, plus both harnesses (PXHTY1 AND PXHTY2). I was lucky because I have a retailer local to me that carries the product, but it would have been a HUGE PITA had I ordered it offline. So I wanted to give others a heads up.
**Please note, that I am not sure if you will need the secondary harness for the non-6-disc changer units.
I'm really excited to finally have my iPod with me in the car. The iPod2Car is very nice if you're running a stock head unit. It charges the iPod, plus you can change all the songs and everything with the head unit (and with the steering wheel controls if you have them).
BTW, I definitely would advise against paying someone to install the iPod2Car. Removing the stock radio is so ridiculously simple, all you need is a putty knife or screw driver, plus a 10mm ratchet wrench and a little time and its done! Took me about 30 minutes total. The shop I went to wanted $300+ with install. I saved a lot of money doing it myself (I wouldn't ever pay a shop to do something I can do myself).
I too installed the ipod2car and am loving it. Although I need more power now so i may go with an amp with line converters and some new speakers.
what i wanted to mention is that the ipod2car does not let the head unit show any information about songs and all you can really do is changge the volume and move from track to track. it would be sick if you could change to different directories with the head unit but it doesnt work. Unless I screwed something up.
If you shop online you shouldn't spend more than $200, eBay is usually around $170, I believe.
It is well worth it. There isn't a better way to connect your iPod to a stock head unit. My dad got the unit that plugs into the cigarette lighter because he thought $200 was too much. Three weeks later he had the iPod2Car because he hated the thing he bought.

Is this everyone else's experience too?
thanks
That's how mine is. You didn't break anything. I'm not too disappointed in not being able to do what you describe. If you think about it, its like handling a CD... you select the album but then you can use the head unit to switch songs and such. Except this way you don't need to carry all the CDs around.
Anybody looking for an ipod adapter, should consider the Blitzsafe TOY/M-link1 V.2. It's 100 bucks cheaper than the iPod2Car, PIE interfaces. The only difference is you dont use the buttons on the head unit, only the volume knob. Since none of them display text on the stereo you have to look at the ipod anyway. Very satisfied customer. Just another option out there.
Peripheral Electronics unveils the revolutionary iPod2car Interface. This unique interface allows you to control an iPod directly from the factory radio. The iPod2car interface delivers CD quality sound directly into the factory sound system via the CD changer port and eliminates the use of noisy RF modulators. The factory radio enables track selection and FFWD / RRWD just like using a CD changer. The iPod2car also keeps the batteries in the iPod charged and ready for on the go use.
• Retains Digital Sound Quality
• Controls iPod Just Like A CD Changer from the factory radio buttons
• Includes 12ft Cable
• Keeps iPod Charged And Ready To Go
• Programmable Interface For Maximum Vehicle Coverage
• Retains iPod display and Controls
• Vehicle specific harnesses available separately.
I got my iPod2Car in the mail yesterday with the PXHTY1 wireharness and the harness doesn't fit the single disk player either. Turns out you need the PXHTY1 and PXHTY2 wireharnesses for all '05 Tacoma stock head units.
