Found a guy tonight through a local car group that has done tons of Toyota swaps. He's quoted me parts and all 8 grand for the 3S swap. Even less for a turbo 1MZ. 12Gs for a 1JZ swap!

Yup, will bolt right up, stock flywheel and clutch, shifter cables (I have my 5spd swap parts for sale if you're interested). You'll need to figure out the situation with the axles though: stock V6 driver's side axle should pop right in, but passenger side requires a carrier bearing support, so you'll need to figure that out (possibly custom make one) as it is also part of the engine mount on a Camry platform.

I believe Caldina tranny is AWD, no? You can convert an AWD tranny to FWD but you will pretty much need a FWD tranny for parts (diff, block off cover), so it makes no sense not to use said donor tranny as is unless it's trashed or something.


Generally, 3S blocks are found with E-series trannies, and 5S blocks are with S-series. The flywheel pattern on 3S and 5S is different, and so is the input shaft and clutch on S and E series boxes, so it's easiest to mate 3S block to E tranny and S-series tranny to 5S block. 3S block to S-tranny is possible, but need aftermarket flywheel and/or customized clutch configuration (you can research more on 3SGTE swaps into NA MR2s for answers on this combo).

Ya, the A541 or whatever V6 Camry's run on. Good for 300hp, probably more. The catch is that the tranny is controlled by the Engine Control Unit, so you'll need to get an auto 3SGTE ECU and a transmission that will work with it. I do not know if a regular FWD A541 is going to play ball with just any 3SGTE ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission, vs M/T for Manual Tranny) ECU. It may, it may not, I just don't know. Perhaps check the wiring diagram at least. Otherwise you'll need a tranny that works with the particular gen 3SGTE ECU you go with, and I don't know if there are any that are FWD and not AWD. Can you convert that auto tranny to FWD? Maybe, but you're really far into the uncharted territory by that point in time.

Yeah I just got back from one shop, and the techs told me that a 5-speed conversion with a E153 would be way easier, and cheaper. So In addition to eh engine swap, I'm also converting it to manual!

Whoop 5-speed turbo fun it is.

If you get high HP in a FWD with an E153 you should probably get a LSD. The stock MR2 LSD was viscous I believe, and then there are clutch types (TRD/Cusco/Kaaz- $800-1k) and helical/geared types (Quaife-$1600).

Reportedly the helicals do not work well in bad weather (>9 months in Canadia) and the viscous ones are reported to be much better for this, see discussion here.

Personal experience with a Quaife in my Viggen...works well, but yes, it's more clunky in bad weather (which I don't encounter too often here in inland CA). It's almost like it doesn't ease in, not as predictable as clutch- or viscous-type LSDs

Bought a 4th Gen 3S-GTE from a JDM Caldina today.

It should arrive within a week or two. Now the wait begins...

I've learned that the s54 and s51 trannys are too weak to withstand boost.

So, what other transmission other than a E153 would work on this swap?

We're having a heck of a time finding a V6 stick shift Camry donor car.

What would need to be done to a MR2 version E153 tranny to make it fit? @slavie ?

That depends on how much boost you intend to run and your intended driving style. Plenty of MR2 guys with 250hp 4th Gen 3SGTE swaps mated to S54 boxes run around without issues.
If you put a set of slicks on, launch the car at every light, and bang shift at redline then yes, S54 will be much easier to blow the gears with than E153.


You would need the shift selector mechanism with corresponding block off plates and mounting brackets to convert a RWD E153 box into a FWD one. Finding said parts may prove to be even more difficult than finding the FWD box itself, unless you find an MR2 guy that had to go the other way and has the parts.
