P0420 and flex pipe exhaust leak

I'm trying to get my Solara up and running. It has had a P0420 code for a while now. Brought it to the exhaust shop to have them inspect everything and they said the cats look physically good (not clogged), but they said my flex pipe is leaking.

Preliminary research online shows that an exhaust leak could cause a P0420. What would you say the chances are that my issue is an exhaust leak and not a bad cat?

Trying to see if the car is worth fixing.

Thanks in advance!

Replace it and see what happens. Not much else you can do.

You could take it to a muffler shop and have them inspect it. Itíll probably not be free, but they should be able to tell you if itís leaking or not.

just an idea but you could pull the spark plugs and drop a little oil in each cylinder. somewhere in low light and using a flashlight if youre under the car it should be easier to see where the exhaust is leaking as it should be a white smoke that the light will help point out

They are telling me the flex pipe is leaking.

What I’m wondering is: is it reasonable to believe the exhaust leak could also cause a P0420 code? (Catalytic converter below efficiency)

To answer your question, yes, an exhaust leak can cause the P0420. If the flex pipe is leaking, you need to get that fixed anyway even if it doesn't fix the P0420.

A leaking flex pipe will increase the exhaust noise-- easy diagnosis. And increased chance of carbon monoxide -CO- poisoning inside the car.

Yes, agreed. Our flex pipe was making the engine exhaust sound loud as well. CO2 leaking under the car isn't a good thing as well, and it should first be fixed for no other more important reason.

Yes. Iíve seen quite a few threads where a leaking flex pipe caused a P0420. Doesnít mean the cat isnít also bad, but the odds are decent itís OK.
