Need help please on Code P0442 on 2000 camry LE, 4cyl

Check engine light came on last month with Code P0440 (no other codes). After reading some posts, I replaced the gas cap with a New Toyota gas cap and cleared the code. Check engine light came on after ~300 miles, this time with a new code P0442 (Evap System Leak), no other codes. The OLD gas cap was fine (i put that cap in my brother's camry, same year and model) and no check engine light on that camry.

Car drives ok with this light. 2000 Camry LE 4Cyl, 75K miles on. (I had a front fender bender couple of months back.)

I am going to clean the EGR valve, check vaccum hoses. Anything else I need to check/replace?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
John

A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
  • A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
  • A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
  • Other small leak in EVAP system
  • Faulty vent o-ring seal
Since its a small EVAP leak its going to be very very hard to locate. You might want to bring it to a shop and have them run a smoke machine into your EVAP system. That's the only way that your going to be able to get this problem solved quickly and efficiently

Thanks for your reply. I will wait couple of days and see anyone else got anything else to check before taking to a "stealership".

Chances are it is either a vapor pressure sensor or the canister itself.

PM sent to you with additional information.

i found a crack in the rubber hose near the egr valve. Replaced the hose and cleaned the egr with some throttlebody cleaner. Will report back if this was indeed the culprit.

I checked the charcol canistor, hoses, filler tube for rust. All looking very nice and no rust or discoloration of any kind.

Thanks for all help

After close to 1100 miles, so far no more CEL. Can't believe it is the crack near the EGR valve caused the EVAP trouble code. Nothing else was replaced, so either the EVAP is still there and the ECM is not picking up or this vaccum leak was causing the EVAP code.

In any case, if anyone else is seeing P442, code it is worth checking all vaccum tubes and see if that fixes the problem.

gas cap loose

I have been battling with a 440 (EVAP small leak) problem for months now.
Checked both vsvs, both clicked when 12v is applied. So that looks ok.
charcol canister and gas tank neck, pipes are all seems very good, no rust any where, no cracks or abnormality anywhere. Changed gas cap with another camry, that car is still running without any error codes. This one got the CEL within 150 miles. Sometimes the code goes out and come back after 1k.

Recently I noticed the gas cap (original toyota) is getting loose and loose. Yesterday at the gas station, I was able to remove the gas cap without any effort at all. I always turn the cap atleast 1/2 rotation after hearing the clicks, yesterday i rotated 2-3 times to be sure (i am the only one filling the gas, so this is consistent). So didn't fill the gas, drove little bit and checked the gas cap, that sucker is really loose.
(when you open the gas cap, you normally hear the high pressure air escaping noise , however this car makes no noise at all)

Before I go buy a brand spanking new gas cap, is there any chance the neck is gone bad? I will probably get a new toyota gas cap this weekend, but just wanted to check your opinion on this.

I was suggested to take the car to a smoking test, got a quote for $180 for this test. I thought before spending, try the obvious ones and see if we can pinpoint this issue.

Appreciate your help

John

I have seen where the filler neck has been bent so bad that the cap has nothing to really tighten onto. If after you purchase a new cap you still have the problem, chances are the loose cap is due to a bad filler neck. But I'd go with the cap first before I went straight at the filler neck.

Good luck to you, I hope it turns out to be only the cap.
