2004 Camry- reverse light wire location

Hello-
Planning on installing Knewood DNX6140 with backup camera this weekend. Got stuck on one thing- where do I locate reverse light wire to splice into to connect camera to HU? Fuse box? Or somewhere in the harness? What color wire should I be looking for?

TIA

Would appreciate some guidance here...

Just hooked up backup camera...black/red on the camera to black/red on the car...red on the camera to red on the car...where do I connect purple/white wire from HU (tagged as reverse switch)? black/red again? The car is 2004 Camry.

TIA

If you had the OEM radio w/nav, the RED with BLACK TRACER wire is located on connector N2 pin 14. This is a 18 pin connector on back of radio.
If you didnít have nav, the stock radio(s) donít show the connections in the electrical drawings.
Electrical Wiring Diagram Manual, Page 28 connector 2k pin 3 has the RED with BLACK TRACER backup-light wire, looks like the best place to connect into. The over-all back-up wiring can be found on page 142 of the same manual. Overall Best bet.
Another connection point might be on the back of the combination meter page 267, hard to get to but a shorter run.

Good Luck.

Thanks Luna2

I got the red/black connected. Purple/white is not connected anywhere now- on DNX6140, if I press and hold Nav, camera comes on, and when I shift to reverse, the picture goes away.

Reviving this 4+ year old threadÖ.

The link to CamryStuff is no longer good. (

Looking to tap into reverse lamp circuit for same reason, to trigger backup camera mode, also in a 2004 LE (J-VIN). Car had JBL system, no nav.

Any guidance on where to locate the aforementioned connector 2k pin 3, or another good place to tap into, preferably accessible near the radio so I do not have to do further disassembly to get it done? Had I known this was going to be such a PITA, I would have ran a lead to the rear bulb when I had everything apart to run the video feed forward.

Found this thread, also an old one (but so is my car ) and post #2 states:

Isn't that what your Service Manual shows??????????????????????????
Some stupid questions, to which the answers seem all too obvious, but will ask just to be sure:

1) are these wires (and the selector reverse switch) located in the console, and accessible if I remove the shift console cover?

2) To get the 12v signal when shifting into reverse, I tap into the pink wire, right?

OR ANOTHER APPROACH...

POST #4 in same thread states:

The connector they are talking about is located behind the glove box.
Hope this helps.

Connect the REVERSE Signal (Camry Gasoline
Vehicle):

Locate connector AE3 and find pin 6. Please see the
photo on the left for the location and below for the
connector view. Once pin 6 is located, you will notice that
the wire is coloured GRAY (REVERSE SIGNAL). For
further information, please consult with the TOYOTA
Camry Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Is connector AE3, pin 6, gray wire, also a good candidate for tapping in to get +12v only when vehicle shifted into reverse?

If so, does anyone have a diagram of which connector and loin position this is on a 2004 LE J-VIN?

Thanks!!

After a couple hours digging, searching, and probing wires, I found the reverse lamp wire.

Here are some photos to help guide the next person, and there will be one, who is looking for this.

This first photo shows the gray connector block, located below the glove box, under the black kick-panel the protects the wiring and ducting from the passenger's feet. You can see the red wire with black stripe that is our target.

This shot shows the same wire views through the opening where the glove box (removed) goes. You can see the PosiTap connector on the wire (Google them, far better than Scotch Locs).

Here we see the purple wire I used (closest match I had to the violet used by the HU manufacturer). It is attached to the Posi-Tap, and everything is anchored in place with zip ties.

Since today is April Fool's Day, here is a photo of one of our Police K-9 Officers writing a report about an incident in the field:

2004 Camry XLE with JBLamp reverse light wire

I used the above pictures for my 2004 Camry LE, and it worked great. Unfortunately a deer decided to commit suicide in front of the Camry.

I picked up a low milage 2004 camry XLE with JBL Amp. Unfortunately the wiring harness was different for the XLE and I could not use the same wire under the glove box to hook up the backup camera. I traced wires from the drivers reverse light back up to the drivers kick panel. I found a Red wire with Black stripe and One(1) Silver dot, that was live while the car was in reverse. Watch out because there is a Red wire with Black stripe and Two(2) Silver dots, that will NOT work.

Do you have the actual plug number and wire pin-out location?
