Giving someone a jump?

My GF's car won't start and she needs me to give her a boost when I get home. Will this work? I assume I can jump off the battery in the trunk, but is this so? Are both terminals exposed? Is there a perfered location for ground? Also, she has a hybrid (Honda Civic), is that an issue? Geez....all these issues.

I can't find it in the '12 TCH manual. It does mentioned if your TCH 12 volt battery is discharged. It can be jumped from a second vehicle. They show the second vehicle cables connected to both poles. The TCH battery they connect the positive cable only. The negative cable connects to a metal ground located near the trunk latch fixed base.

I wouldn't chance it as your TCH 12 volt battery is not designed for high cranking amps. I would buy the GF a 2 or 3 year battery and be done with it. Could be her car's battery terminals may need cleaning if they are on top of the battery. Could be a worn alternator belt unless the battery is 3 to 4 years old and known to be weak.

Sands,

Thanks for your reply. Her battery was new in march 2012, four to five months old.

Given the amount of sensitive electronic content in modern vehicles I would not offer a "jump" to anyone under any circumstances.

I'm going to pay to have it towed tomorrow. After reading around, I think there is more than meets the eye here.

I use a portable jump starter if a neighbor needs a jump.

Investing in a small battery charger is not a bad idea.

At night you can ease the trunk lid down and see if the trunk light goes out. Another is some cars have a courtesy light switch for the rear floorboard. I seen that one run down new batteries if the car is parked for a few days. A weak or defective alternator but today you usually get a charging system warning. Let us know what fixed the problem.

I hit the 'mart this morning and got a portable charger. It seems to have a full charge, so I will use it to see if we can get her going! I got one with a air compressor too, so I can play around with finding the optimal tire PSI for best mileage!

Sound good, air pressure vs gas mileage. That's easy, the more air the better your mpg. Never go above the max air pressure marked on the sidewall of your tires. Best to do your tire pressures after dusk when the tires are cool. That makes it easier to get all 4 tires at the same pressure.

For improved mpg I would suggest 40 psi cold if you have michelin's. Other brands may ride ok at 38 psi. Tires aired to 36 cold in any tire will ride really smooth if your after the best ride.

Question to ask on a portable air compressor. I'm looking at getting the VIAIR 450P Automatic Function Portable Compressor. Power cable connects directly to the car battery, has a ma current draw of 20 amps, 100% duty cycle. I would assume I connect it to the TCH 12 volt battery, start the car, then use the compressor. Will this compressor be a problem to use on the TCH?

The XLE TCH manual says, The power outlet can be used for 12 V accessories that run on less than 10 A. My thinking is the 20 A portable compressor is for gas powered vehicles.

You might try calling Toyota Customer Service toll free number in California. Sometimes they are good at answering questions such as yours. A good toyota dealer service person might know the answer.

Think of sitting still with your engine off, headlights on. They draw lot of amps from the 12 volt battery. Same for the AC on, engine off, the cabin and AC cooling fan next to the radiator both pull lots of amps from that same 12 volt battery.

I don't think I would try it till finding more information from a few phone calls.
