03 XLS JBL Changer - Closed

My wife's Avalon XLS has the JBL 6 disk changer. It decided to go belly up (still has some discs stuck in it). I debated replacing the head unit with an aftermarket but wife is not too tech savvy and the factory unit pleases her.

I picked up a used and supposedly working unit on eBay. I have it installed and the radio works fine but the CD changer doesn't. If I push the "load" button it flashes Changer Full on the display. But it doesn't play anything and the little 3-disc icon flashes on the upper right of the display.

Is this unit junk as well? There is mention in other threads that it could be a security measure but I'm unsure if even the radio would work if that were the case. I've disconnected the battery and let it sit for a while to see if that clears it without success. If there is a security code, is that stored in the body control module or some other aspect of the car, or in the head unit itself?

Thanks for any suggestions.
Brad

No one has bitten?

Here is an older thread:

You gotta love timing. I JUST tossed my JBL premium HU in the trash. eBay was showing lots of them out there for $40 or so, knew I would not sell it for anything worth the bother. So in the garbage it went (it was workign perfectly). Sorry dude I would have given you mine for the cost of shipping.

I would take it apart - why not!

No I didn't get any suggestions beyond yours. I still have the old unit and popped the top but the CDs look like they're on the spindle as they should be. But I may try to find a day to put that radio back in and see if the player works. Otherwise I may just end up getting a different non-OEM head unit.

Thanks for checking.

The nice this about a newer HU is you can avoid CDs altogether and use the USB and/or BT interface (rip the CDs down to MP3s and never worry about it again ). My OEM 6 disc deck in the Camry never had any real CD use as I used the aux port connected to my iPod.

If/when you go aftermarket you will need to consider a radio interface kit if you have the JBL amp, and will want an SWC kit if you want to retain steering wheel controls. I posted a thread on doing all that and can give pointers if you need them then.

Thanks for the insight. There aren't any steering controls on this but I do have the JBL system.

If you do opt to go aftermarket, I would strongly recommend Crutchfield. Great prices and everything you will need. They will even wire up the harnesses so all you essentially do is plug and play.

Marking this thread as "closed" as I found the problem. It wasn't that a code was needed, the radio was plug and play as some thought it should be.

Turns out the radio I got (ebay) even though it was supposed to be perfectly fine and working had CDs stuck inside with two jammed into the same changer slot. I was able to get the CDs out but the part of the mechanism that pulls the CD in and ejects it doesn't work. I could slip a disk in (using another CD to get the disk all the way in) and it would play as expected. But unable to eject.

While I'd prefer to keep the OEM radio as it performed adequately for my needs, the CD changer is considered a weak spot so will just look at an aftermarket replacement and be done with it.

Thanks for the update. Again, I recommend CrutchField. One stop shopping!
