Another Knocking/Noise Thread...SOUND CLIP ADDED

I will preface by saying as soon as I can get some audio of the knocking I will post it, but I need help. We purchased a 08 Sport with 111000 miles on it. The vehicle is in great shape and the maintenance records show the car well taken care of. Anyway, after driving it for about 100 miles we got a knocking noise. It DOESNT happen on cold start, but usually after the car has been running for a while and not all the time either. It also seems to happen only in the lower rpm range and seems to go with the rpm when it does happen. There are no indications of anything else, no caution lights or vibrations. It also doesn't last very long either, maybe only a few minutes and if gas is applied the noise tends to go away. It almost sounds like a fan kicks on after the knocking goes away but I'm not sure about that. It seems like most of the knocking issues have been associated with the vvt, or are a distinct pinging in the engine. It's been hard to dial in on because it we will be driving, the noise will start and i'll pull over to pop the hood and then it goes away. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks,

Until you can post up the sound in a video, can you narrow down the sound at all, like is it a low-pitched or high-pitched knock? Is it very intermittent or more like a near-constant tapping? Etc.

So I was able to get a short audio of the knocking, it sounds almost like a diesel. This was after a 25min highway drive to work in the morning as I was pulling into the parking lot. It's not great quality, but I did what I could to catch the noise. If you listen closely you can hear it sounds like a diesel, and it only made that noise for about 1:30 mins then when away before I parked. Ill try and get out and see if i can get it to do it with the hood open in neutral for better audio later.

I had a similar intermittent noise like that once and it turned out to be a loose spark plug. It was not seated in all the way but usually happened when the engine was cold so i'm not sure that is your issue.

Couple of additional questions. Do you happen to know the maintenance history of your Highlander? Also, does this noise occur only during idling, or does it mostly happen when you're moving but under continuous RPM?

Normal engine noise

Change oil and filter. Keep level full. Keep driving.

Another option is one grade thicker oil

Am assuming nothing is loose or worn out, especially those components driven by serpentine belt
