Rear Brake Drum Noise/Sticking wheel hub assembly

Hey guy's first off I want to say how happy I am to be on this forum! I have had my 2000 Corolla for 6 years now 🙂 So my issue is that one of my rear brake drums is hard to turn when the Wheel is off. I have noticed this twice when changing my winter/summer tires. The other related symptom is rubbing noise when driving/braking. The strange thing is though that the noise will be present when first driving but will quickly go away after driving for a while. Also weird that it happens a lot after Rain/Moisture. Important to note that the Rear brakes were fully serviced by a mechanic a few years ago. I also replaced both Drums shortly after. I am thinking the shoes might not be adjusted properly and are contacting the drum? Possibly even the parking brake is causing the shoes to rub because it isn't properly adjusted? It has so much play in it when its pulled up and no click noise. I have never worked on Drum brakes before. I am also scared maybe the wheel bearing could be bad? I guess my first step will be to remove the drum and see if the wheel
hub assembly is easier to spin? Any opinions or advice would be appreciated.

I would say the best answers you’re gonna get is removing the drum and spinning it to see what’s rubbing. Just because you got them serviced a few years ago doesn’t mean they’re still perfect. They shouldn’t be hard to spin. Post some pics when/if you do it and we all will get a better idea.

Maybe the shoes are just set out a little too much. There's an adjusting wheel in the brake drum assembly. Turning it one way adjusts the shoes out, and the other way in. I can't remember which is which. Try adjusting them to bring the shoes in a little bit.

Thanks for the reply. I will be sure to post pics tomorrow of the Brake assembly with the drum removed. Fingers crossed it will be easy to turn once the drum is off.

That is what I am hoping is going on. The rubbing noise while driving/braking has been happening for years, it is only noticeable sometimes though. Usually when first driving and after it rains.(strange) I realized something was going on that needed to be fixed after doing my summer tire swap recently. Because I noticed the rim was hard to turn. I will post pictures tommorow with the drum removed.

You need to adjust the brakes properly. With the parking brake set,lift the rear of the vehicule and place it on jackstands.Release parking brake and remove the wheels and drums.Clean the dust off the brake assemblies with aerosol brake cleaner.Turn the drum brakes adjusting screw until there is a slight drag when spinning the wheel.Replace drum.wheel and lower the car.Go for a test drive.

A word of caution: Never press on the brake pedal when the drums are removed.

yeah thats what i hope the issue is. it is only on the passenger rear side that is having the dragging noise/drum is hard to turn. What does the adjuster look like and which way do I turn it to give more clearance? Thanks.

Is there a slot in the backing plate that allows access to the adjuster star wheel. If so you need an adjusting tool or a flat tip screwdriver and a flashlight to locate the star wheel which you turn to adjust the brake shoes. If you go the wrong way it will get even tighter, go the other way and it should loosen up, voila drum will practically fall off on it's own.

Good News! Okay so I got the Drum off. Everything looks okay just a crap ton of brake dust. Also very rusty backing plate. Shoes still have plenty of material. I rotated the wheel hub assembly and it moved freely and didn't hear any noise. So no bad wheel bearing &#x1f642; I then cleaned the brake dust and put the drum back on. Once the rim was back on it seemed to actually rotate quite easily. YOU CAN HEAR a very light rubing noise each rotation. What I am thinking is going on is the Rusty backing plate is partially rubbing on the back of the drum.

Few things I noticed here for future readers.
1) brake noise or grinding after rain is 100% normal on any car for the first few stops it's just surface rust
2) to check a wheel bearing safely lift a corner with Jack stands grab the wheel at 3&9 o'clock and try to pull the wheel off to feel for play. If no play repeat at 12 &6 o'clock if no play or wobble the bearings are fine if play is found inspect control arm, ball joint bushings with pry bars for play then condemn the bearing.

Sometimes,rust can grow on the drum channel between the backing plate and the drum.Use a wire wheel or coarse sandpaper to clean the rust.
