The excessive oil consumption is actually on the 10th gen Corolla XRS's with the 2.4L 2AZ engine. The 1.8L engines did not have the oil consumption problems. What caused the oil consumption problem on the 2.4L engine were defective piston rings and if you had a XRS with oil burning issues, you could bring it to a Toyota dealer and they will replace the engine.
The XRS was available in the U.S. in 2009 and 2010 so buying either a 2009 XRS or 2010 XRS, you might run into the oil consumption issue. Since you want to get a family car, I'd recommend getting either a 2009 or 2010 LE or S as those have the the 1.8L engine and they are better on gas compared to the 2.4L. 2009 Corolla's had minor first year problems such as bad water pumps (an updated one was made and most 2009's by now should have them installed), startup rattle, etc. but nothing too concerning. Again, for your needs, I'd recommend looking at a 2009 or 2010 Corolla LE or S. You could also look at a L (base trim) if you want to save some money.
