I am getting better gas mileage with 89 octane??

I been noticing that if I fill up with 89 octane, I would be getting like 46 mpg on the freeway vs 87 octane.

The other thing I notice is that 89 octane in the city, the Yaris will retard less timing than 87, I notice it when accelerating on a freeway overpass.

Any long term harm to the cat converter using 89 octane? Someone at work said that it will slowly destroy the cat converter over time by using 89 octane vs the Recommend 87 that is listed in the manual. I wonder if that is true?

Octane doesn't destroy the cat. Someone at work is an idiot.

Usually if octane helps, you probably have carbon buildup or cooling problem. Consider a couple bottles of FI cleaner, and verify coolant, thermostat, fan, waterpump/belt.....
mark888 and cb91710 like this.

So many trolls so little time

I just put the Lucas complete fuel treatment into the tank and the car got 46 mpg. Before it was around 30 to 32 and sometimes 27mpg.
