One headlight gets dim the other gets brighter visa versa.

So I know there is a short somewhere, but I am looking for a better understanding of the headlight system. It's a 2007 Yaris. Two things... 1st of all, what is the cause of hardened stiff wires and does the whole section need to be removed? Secondly, where do the two headlights connect together to allow for them to pull power from each other? Any other possibilities? History: this car has been in an accident and I was trying to replace the connector which was cracked when I found the problem goes deeper. Possible concern: the connector that fits the bulb for this car is a 14 gauge but the cars wires to headlight are 18 gauge or similar, but not the same.
