I'm looking for a first gen toyota echo

Hello ToyotaNation,

I'm on the market for a first gen(99-05) Toyota Echo as a daily driver.
What should I look out for?

Thanks,
Richard

As with any used car, try to do some detective work on maintenance history. If the car is from a high rust area such as Michigan, Ohio, or Vermont etc. I would look closely at the front subframe for signs of rot. Typically these cars are bullet proof and the drive trains last an easy 180,000 miles on average. The Echo is very simple and doesn't have any complicated auto temp control systems or other accessories that fail. Both the auto and man trans are very reliable, trans preference is up to the driver as the man trans tends to give you more peppy acceleration; I prefer an auto as I don't like to shift gears. I purchased mine a year ago with 80k miles and now have 96k miles. I have done zero work to this car with the exception of a few oil changes and wiper blades. Hope this helps.

2005 Corolla LE AT- 1ZZFE - 145,000 mi
2008 Corolla LE AT- 1ZZFE - 181,000 mi
2005 Vibe - AT 1ZZFE - 151,000 mi.
2014 RAV4 - LE - FWD - 38,000 mi.

Canada First gen Echo

I had a 2000 automatic, any speed under 80kph (50mph) I drove it with the O.D. off, above that speed O.D. on.
The auto is quite peppy that way even with the air on and it slows down better in traffic.

Now I have a 2001, 5 speed, picked it up for $3000.- with 155000 km on the clock, it's certified and e-tested with a new clutch, brakes and tires. There are some minor scratches on the paint other than that it's in pretty good shape and I plan to put many more km on it.

Pretty much summed it up. Sure they are boring but they are tankers. I'm surprised that my car starts up considering the way I drive it sometimes

Mazda: rust standard, brakes optional
