Confused about atp cabin air filter install?

I am confused about how to install atp cabin air filter. The filter indicates with arrows where the air flow is directed, but I don't know if in my 2012 TCLE (see picture below), the air flow comes from bottom up or the top down. The owner's manual only indicates how to install a TOYOTA cabin filter with the arrows pointing UP. Does this means the cabin air flow goes from bottom UP or the other way around? The ATP cabin filter show this, "arrow down AIR FLOW arrow down" (sorry I could not type arrows up or down)--note the arrows down from the label "AIR FLOW", and I hope this is clear. I would appreciate any help here. Thank you all.

The air flow arrow should point down. The blower motor positioned after the filter and sucks the air through the filter from top to the bottom.

actual it is pointing UP as seen in the pic. I just installed mine and I just followed what's indicated in the cabin filter cover. BTW, the cabin filter has an arrow printed as well so you won't go wrong.

If you are talking about the OEm or like OEM marked filters you are correct, cuz OEM filter has an arrow pointing at which side up the filter should be installed, but most aftermarket filters have an arrow pointing the direction of the air flow like that Fram:

The blower motor located underneath the filter housing and sucks the air through the filter, so airflow direction is from top to the bottom.

Yes, the arrow on Fram filters indicate the air flow and should be pointed down.

Molson.david is incorrect. The arrow should point up toward the sky and not toward the ground. The filter is designed to flow better in a specific flow direction. The blower motor underneath the filter is blowing the air up and not sucking down. I don't think it is big deal but you don't want to stress the motor by having the filter in a less efficient direction.

So if the motor blows the air up, how in the hell the debris ended up on top of the filter?

Aren't you Toyota tech?

The arrow on the cover and OEM filter does not indicate the direction of the airflow.

The "UP" arrow does not denote air flow direction but actually shows directionality of the OEM toyota cabin filter since it has the same configuration? I purchased a microgard cabin filter and there is an arrow, I inserted the filter pointing down since the air flows from above to the bottom of the filter. Can someone correct if I am wrong?

The "UP" on the plate does NOT indicate airflow direction. It only indicates the top of the filter should face up. In this case, the airflow direction is top to bottom. So if the filter says "airflow" with two arrows pointing down, install it with the arrow pointing down. If it's the OEM filter with an "UP" written on it, then align it with the "UP" on the plate.

+Andy Tan Thank you. I am always confused about this as most of the cabin air filters I buy have the "AIR FLOW" with the arrows pointing down; thus, I will installing a new cabin filter with arrows pointing DOWN. Again thanks.

Thanks for the paper suggestion.

I just saw this post now and used a piece of paper as you suggested, to determine the direction of airflow.

The air does flow from the top to the bottom, as evidenced by the paper getting pulled downwards when I turned the fan on.

In that case, the air flow arrow on the Fram filter should be pointing down, which means the darker charcoal side of the filter will also be facing down.

Sorry for the confusion. Do I have this all correct now?

Playing devil's advocate here, but - The motor blows upward, debris falls through the external vent from above, gets blown upward, and settles back onto the filter when the blower is shut off.

It COULD work that way - I don't think that it does.

I also think it was a singularly poor decision on Toyota's part to make the filter and lid with an UP arrow on them when airflow is downward and most aftermarket filters indicate airflow direction. They could have made it with a DOWN arrow on both and avoided any confusion.

(And most Americans look at pictures and only bother to read if a gun is held to their heads).

But Toyo didn't ask me ...

I think they put an arrow on the cover to prevent the owners from trying to install it incorrectly and it has nothing to with the airflow direction. Not sure if the cover would fit upside down, but that is my guess.
And the arrow on the OEM filter simply pointing to the proper way to install the filter, cuz all Toyota vent. systems have a very similar design. A lot of the aftermarket filters fit more than one make and model and some of them might have airflow from bottom to the top, so if they would put a "this side up" arrow, that would lead to the improper installation and complains, so they put "airflow" arrow instead.
I had a 2007 Camry and helped with filters and some other stuff to my coworkers and friends that own/used to own Venza, Tundra, different Camry models and Lexus, so that arrow is not confusing me at all, but like I said I have more experience than most of the first time owners.

Understood - but if they had an arrow pointing DOWN and the word DOWN next to it on both the lid and the filter there would be less chance for confusion.

Yes, but Toyota engineers decided differently and for some reason they never asked us.

i just flipped my fram fresh breeze cabin filter with the arrow pointing down. so basically, the carbon side is on top. what a difference in the smell lol. and yeah, it will fit no matter what the orientation on the arrow is. the only issue is that the air will not be filtered correctly as evidenced by the smell. thanks @ molson.david.
