How to navigate Toyota Nation forums

1. When visiting any Toyota Nation forum (in this case the Prius forum) you will see a listing of the available threads in that forum, arranged according to which ones have been replied to most recently. If you decide you'd like to post a new thread to the forum, then simply click on the New Thread button located to the upper left of your screen:

2. Clicking on New Thread will open the following window, which will allow you to add smilieys, change font style or size, and a number of other features. When finished composing your material, simply click on Submit New Thread at the bottom of the window:

3. When reading any thread in the forums and you decide you'd like to reply to it without quoting another member's comments, click on Post Reply at the upper left of your screen to open the reply window:

4. As you can see the window to submit a reply is nearly identical to the new thread window. Simply type in your text, make any adjustments to the reply you like, then click on Submit Reply to post it to the thread:

5. When reading replies within any thread you have several buttons to the lower right that will allow you to do different things. Starting from left to right: Edit, which will allow you to edit only your replies; Quote, which you can click if you want to respond to a member's reply and quote the material and then comment below it; the Minus symbol you click if you want to reply to multiple members' replies, but do it all in one reply of your own (simply click on the Minus symbol in each reply you want to respond to, and then click on the Post Reply button); the Quick Reply button; the Blog This Post button that will allow you to post that reply to your Blog; finally, the Thanks button that allows you to thank that member for his or her comment:

6. If for any reason you would like to edit the title of your own thread, then in reply #1 to your thread click on the Edit button which will open the editing window, then click on the Advanced Edit button which will open the following window. Simply edit your thread title and offer an explanation for the edit:

7. If you would like to send a private message (PM) to any member there are a number of ways of doing that. One way is to look at the extreme upper right corner of any forum page and you will see the following link below your user name which will open your PM window:

8. Clicking on Private Messages will not only open your Inbox, but will also allow you access to your member control panel, visible to the left of the screen. From there you can change your avatar, add a signature, and adjust many account settings. If you want to change your user name and/or need some other account issue addressed that you can't do yourself, please contact an Administrator located on our Staff Contact List:

9. If you would like to find out more information on a member, and also if you would like to send a member a private message, just click on their user name located at the left side of any reply which will open a menu that looks like this (please ignore the One Touch Ban and Clean entry, that's an Admin thing....):

10. If you choose to click on View Public Profile then it will open the following window, which will allow you to view a number of aspects about that member including one additional way to send him or her a private message. Just click on any of the tabs to view that option:

Once you've learned these basic steps you've pretty much mastered the forums. However, if you would like to review even more information and tips about posting to the forums please read through our other sticky thread, Helpful Recommendations For New Members. If you still have questions about how to use the forums please contact a staff member from the Staff Contact List. Thanks, and enjoy Toyota Nation!

How do I create links to documents or web URLs?

For those who want to post up file types other than photographs, they need to be hosted on a web hosting service first before you can post them to Toyota Nation. There are a few free hosting services out there, and I use WebNG myself, but I don't vouch for them either so you'll want to check them out for yourself. If you Google "free file hosting" you'll come up with a few other sites that you can choose from as well.

Posting files like .pdf files is very simple, and you can do it in two ways. You can either simply post up the link to a thread/reply, which will read like a web URL and members can click on it to view the document, or you can create a link to the document by typing out your text, highlighting it with your cursor which will change the text color to blue, and then click on the Create Link icon . Let me show you how:

In the thread and/or reply you want to add the link, click on the Edit button to the lower right side of your window and it will open the following editing window. The yellow arrow indicates the text you want to add the document/URL link to:

Now use your mouse cursor to select the text you want to add the link to, and you'll notice it turns blue:

Next, click on the Create Link icon which will open the link edit window as indicated by the dual arrow:

Paste your URL into the window and click on the OK button:

This last screenshot shows what the link looks like after you've completed the process:

Congratulations, you're done creating a link!

What is a sticky thread?

This seems simple enough, but it is a very common question for people new to web forums.

A sticky thread is a forum thread that Moderators consider important, so they "stick" it like a Post-It note to the top of a given forum. The sticky threads on Toyota Nation are permanently located at the top of the forum you're viewing, and they're always highlighted in blue as indicated below:

That's all there is to sticky threads.

How do I edit the title of my thread?

For any thread that you have created, click on Edit in reply #1 to your thread:

This will open the text editing window, and next you will click on the Go Advanced button:

This opens the advanced editing window, and the yellow arrow in the screenshot below indicates the location where you can edit the title of your thread. Simply type in your new title, post up a reason for making the change if you like, then click on Save Changes at the bottom of the same window and you're done.

How do I edit my signature?

To edit your signature, please do the following:

From ANY page on Toyota Nation, navigate to the red bar near the top of the page and click on the Control Panel menu item as indicated by the yellow arrow:

That will open your member control panel, which will allow you to edit your signature, avatar, and other features of your personal profile. The red arrow indicates the location of the Edit Signature link located in the left pane:

That will open the signature edit page, which is shown in the following two images (because of the length of the page and scrolling required to view all the details, two pictures were needed). The top image shows the text window for adding text to your signature, and the bottom image shows the interface that allows you to post a picture to your signature:

This last image shows a close up of the Upload Signature Picture window, which allows you to either upload a picture hosted by Photobucket or other picture hosting service, or a second option that allows you to upload a photo from your computer. Please note that if your photo exceeds either the pixel limit or byte size limit, your photo will not upload:

How do I reply to a thread, reply to multiple members, or edit quoted replies?

The following will show you how to reply to a thread, respond to two or more replies within a thread, and also how to edit the other member's quoted material you're replying to.

When viewing any thread, to reply to a specific member and quote their text just click on the Quote button located to the lower right corner of any member's reply, as indicated by the yellow arrow:

That will open the Reply To Thread window. In that window you will see the other member's reply placed between HTML quotation attributes labeled QUOTE, as indicated by the yellow arrows below. The red arrow indicates the text I've added to the reply for this example. Please note that you can edit the other member's quoted material so that any unnecessary text can be eliminated, which will allow you to respond to a specific sentence or phrase from the other member's reply.

Once you've typed your reply beneath the quoted material just click Submit Reply and you're done. Your reply will then appear as a new reply to that thread, with the other member's text in a quotation box as illustrated in the next picture:

If you want to quote more than one member for your reply, then what you do is while reading a particular thread just click on the minus symbol (-) located immediately to the right of the Quote button (as indicated in the top picture below), which will turn to a red plus symbol (+) immediately after you click on it (as indicated in the second picture below). Navigate down to the other members' replies and click on the same minus symbol until you've selected all the members you want to quote, and then click on the Post Reply button located at the upper left and also at the lower left in any thread. That will automatically open the Reply To Thread window where you'll see all the members' quotes located in that reply window.

This last picture simply illustrates the quoted material from two different members as viewed in the Reply To Thread window, and remember that you can edit these quotes, move them around, and position your replies in various locations, spacing, etc. Also remember that if after submitting your reply it doesn't look or read the way you want it to, then just click on the Edit button and edit the material so it reads correctly. That's all there is to replying with quotes.

What is Gameroom cash?

Gameroom cash is virtual money that allows you to gamble in Toyota Nation's "Gameroom." You can visit Gameroom by clicking here. You earn Gameroom cash $100 each time you reply to a thread, and you earn $400 for each new thread you start. Sometimes people can be awarded Gameroom cash by a staff member, and of course you can win in the Gameroom and earn there as well. That's pretty much all there is to Gameroom. Play, and enjoy!

Benefits of Supreme Membership

Advertising by Supporting Vendors pays for the forums and the free content users access on Toyota Nation, but, yes, advertising is the "price" people pay for that free content. For anyone who uses these forums on a regular basis and gets quality information or help out of it from interaction with other members, DIYs, etc., and if also you would like to eliminate most of the advertisements you see when navigating the forums, then may I suggest purchasing a Supreme membership...click here to review the benefits.

With a Supreme and/or Lifetime Supreme membership you get less advertising, VIP forum access, larger avatar, larger signature, gallery space, and more. It's just my opinion, but if you take into account how much any one of us pays for your car, the repairs for your car, cost of modifications, cost of a factory service manual for you do-it-yourselfers, then the cost of a Supreme membership (particularly the Lifetime Supreme when compared to the regular Supreme) is negligible when compared to the overall cost of your car/cars you own now or will own in the coming years. And don't forget, all that advertising that bothers you will be eliminated. Just a suggestion. Thanks!
