Aftermarket Drive shaft or repair


Had the neighborhood mechanic take a look at my driveshaft on my 2004 Tundra Access Cab 4x4.

It's for the vibrations I am experiencing at higher speeds, then the clunking noise that I get sometimes when coming to a stop.

He has a lift in his garage.

On my rear shaft, he stated that the carrier bearing has a little more play then he would like to see and the rubber is torn a little. Also stated that my slip yoke was leaking.

Does anyone have any experience with buying an aftermarket driveshaft from places likes rockauto?

After pricing the carrier bearing, the slip yoke and a few u joints, it seems to be more cost effective to buy the entire assembly brand new.

The neighborhood mechanic could change out the carrier bearing and slip yoke, and what u joints need to be replaced, but he stated it would be wise to have it balanced. he doesn't have the capability to balance drive shafts. He suggested going to a local shop.

Going to a local shop will be an issue, they all want to bring the shaft to them (Which I understand) however, I only have 1 vehicle and if I remove the shaft, I wouldn't have a vehicle to get it to them.

Rock auto wants about $480 complete. I don't know much about the brand. Its a Dorman 936-716

Dorman is an average aftermarket parts company.
If your drive shaft is just like the one in the picture, the price isn't that bad.

The clunk is often related to the slip joint and a home TSB, and official Ford TSB for their similar problem, involve cleaning and repacking with a high moly content grease + PTFE grease (I used Super-lube EP).

Some of the guys that have been replacing ujoints on driveshafts for a long time say it is not necessary to rebalance, unless one of the weights has come off. I had one of mine rebalanced with the latest and greatest machines. It was $90 and I have to say did not notice any difference.
