USA What is this mystery tube/wire above the transmission?

Hey All!

I am in the middle of rebuilding the engine on my '92 4x4 Toyota Pickup w/ manual Transmission.

I've got the engine out and I quickly noticed that there was a tube that wasn't connected to anything just hanging there...


I didn't disconnect it, and there doesn't seem to be any unused penetrations in the firewall like the one next to it goes through...

It runs over the transmission and then is clipped in several places as it runs towards the rear of the truck.

I chased the other end of the tube/wire to the frame on the passengerís side and it wasnít attached to anything either! It looks like a wire that is pretty frayed on the end. I also didnít see anything around it that it could attach to. This is located before you get to the gas tank.


I looked through the FSM and couldnít find anything that looked like thisÖ I honestly am not even sure what system itís forÖ Any ideas???

Is it part of the parking break?

Hope it isnít anything important, since Iíve been driving around for what I would assume has been years like that!

Hmmm... So I guessed right, I guess that is good and bad! I am sorry to say that I am still stumped!!

The only reference to the parking brake that I can find in the FSM is BR-9... No real good picture, or description of how it supposed to be hooked up on either end.

I also searched TN for other parking brake and e-brake threads, 100s of hits but didn't find anything there either. If I missed it sorry!

1. Is there a good picture or diagram of how and where this hooks up on both ends?
2. Do you think I can fix my current one, or does it need to be replaced?
3. Is this something that I can do from the outside or do I need to tear apart my dash to do this?
4. My parking brake is currently engaged and holding the truck fine. Does this make sense?
5. Is the other line that runs next to it in the picture part of the parking brake system too? Is that rubber boot thing below the fire wall in the right place?

Thanks in advance for all of your help and guidance! I can't wait to get my truck up and running again!

ooooooOOOOOooooo I just looked closer, you have 2 ebrake cables under there. one is hooked up, the other is the broken one that's obvious. someone fixed it but was too f-ing lazy to pull the old one out which means the new one probably isn't in the clips. I know what you mean about the manual not having anything about the brake.

So can I remove the one that doesn't seem to be hooked up?

Can I putting the cable that is in use in the clips without messing it up, or it needing adjusting?

Does that black rubber boot on the fire wall end of the attached cable need to be relocated? Where is it supposed to be?

Does this explain why the e-brake light on the dash has constantly been on for the whole time I have owned the truck whether the parking brake was set or off (it was on when I bought it, but I was told that the e-brake/parking brake worked)??

yes you can remove the old one.
yes do install the boot if you can.
yes you can put it in the clips, assuming you can reach them.
there are 3 reasons the light can come on by itself: low brake fluid, bad ebrake switch, malfunction somewhere. Look under the dash on the ebrake assembly, the switch is on the long tube a few inches offthe firewall. should be plugged in and a tab on the part you pull out should push in a microswitch when you release the brake.
