Gear Oils Viscosity

I have a 1986 4x4 man trans. Looking at shop manual it says 75w-90 for transfer and trans and 80w-90 for differentials. Owners manual says 75w-90 for everything. Anyone with changing experience, would appreciate your input.
Also had oils changed 7 years ago and do not know what they used so I cannot just add because might be a different viscosity, so I am thinking I have to purge and refill each one

Thanks
Jim

If low level, you can add any correct spec fluid even if it was a different brand/viscosity used before.

Gear oil needs to be a GL5 or better for the diff. Whether its a 75w90, 80w90, sae90..... 75w110, 75w140... depends on the load you put on it and any known pre-engineered defects, while referencing the weather.

The manual transmission would benefit from a GL4 75w90. Amsoil MTG, Ford XTM5QS, and Redline MT90 are great choices.

The transfer case can take either.

Top off now and drain/refill after you order some quality fluids.

So many trolls so little time

Hi Greasymechtech

So mixing that little will not cause a problem ?

Are you a fan of any brand names ie. Valvoline, Penzoil, etc?

Thanks
Jim
