Melting Dashboard

For those of us that have the problem, it looks like something might actually happen with it. I saw on the local news last night that Toyota is planning a major recall for the "melting dashboard" issue. They even had a Camry dash just like the one in my car to display the problem.

I was quoted close to $3000 to have mine replaced last year and I declined. Mine is not actually gooey yet, but it is coming apart in small chunks. If anything hits it, a chunk comes out. IE: a finger nail, sun shade, etc... It looks like the main reason for the recall is the glare associated with the material breaking down. They are considering the glare associated with the degradation a safety issue.

I have windshield tinted, so not likely to happen... But sorry to hear, snook. Sucks.

Whoa

What model year are we talking about here?

My dashboard looks like it did when new in April 2012, but it's rarely in the sun.

More details please?

An article about it:
http://www.click2houston.com/news/dr...fixed/27325818
This apparently affects Toyotas and Nissans prior to 2009.

If you have the problem, you might choose to cover it rather than pay thousands to replace it:

Our Local news last night:

http://www.wptv.com/money/consumer/t...ld-be-recalled

A lot of the videos, including the one in the garage show the 2007-2011 Camry dash. For those who have not experienced it, it is just a matter of time in those cars and years.

My particular problem is minor compared to some of those pics. Sad that a dash cannot last longer than 6 years.... Funny thing is that our car has always been garage kept since new. Got a ton of miles though.

No kidding. Kisarevich and Ditlow in FL. Nuff said. But good part about this is - they may actually do push recall for everyone else, ha-ha.
At the rate it goes, early TCH owners may end up with continuously re-newed vehicles then. Say I have new pump and coolant flush. Now I have new brake whatever they did last time and brake fluid flush. Possibility for new dash - what may actually take care of them darn squeaks. Keep going, Toyota.

Received a letter from Toyota extending the warranty on the dash to 10 years from the date the car was put in service. The letter also said parts are not yet available in sufficient numbers to repair all units with this issue.

No problems up here in Canada with a 2012. At least no visible problems though I have physically checked the materials. I'll take a look in summer.

Yep... I just received the same letter today. Basically, they are saying "deal with a crappy dash".

If mine were melting, I would sell it immediately. I have had a few tiny pieces come out, but nothing major yet.

You guys are not reading the entire thread... If you have a 2012 you are fine. I'm sure you will have other problems to look forward to in the years to come and as the miles rack up on your cars.
