Arrow 1st oil change

Toyota recommends doing the first oil change at 16,000 kms (10,000 miles), then every 16,000 kms (10,000 miles)… I just drained the original 0W-16 now at 1,000 kms (621 miles). It came out incredibly thin, like alcohol. I don't like how it then splatters small droplets around the drain pan. It did have a very peculiar fuel dilution smell.

A larger oil filter cannot be used, as the filter mount is not machined any wider than it has to be for oem sized filter. I was only surprised to see the original oil filter was made in China.

I had to drive it up on blocks to use a jack. It'll be much easier driving it up on ramps. Oil filter and drain plug are well accessible after removing 4 screws securing the cover, with a 10mm socket and ratchet... I'm changing it with Valvoline synthetic 0W-20. It took 4.55 liters (4.8 US quarts) to refill instead of 4.3, changing the oil without replacing the oil filter.

Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic ILSAC Grades (except 0W-16) meet the newly adopted API SN PLUS classification, protecting GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines from low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI).

Thumbs up

More photos underneath. Parts of the bottom panels, etc, are sticky from the Ziebart oil guard rust proofing:

Oil and filter

You can get Toyota Oil 0W16 for $6.51 per bottle and filter for $5.86 from your Toyota Dealer. I believe that they will give you a 15% discount if you buy one case of oil (6 bottles).

Filter is made in China, but keep in mind that this country produces as many vehicles as USA, so quality should be okay.

It is nice to see how well isolated the under body of the car is!

I'm looking at the '19 Hatchback manual now and it is the same as the '16 Corolla and the '18 iM.
Change oil at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, etc....

If you look carefully, an oil change is part of Service #2 and Service #3 . Combined, that means once every 16K km (10K miles).

Okay, that makes sense. I hadn't noticed Service # 3.

It took 4.55 liters (4.8 US quarts) to refill instead of 4.3, changing the oil without replacing the oil filter... I'll probably change oil and filter (4.6 liters) at 8,000 kms, then every 8,000 kms (5,000 miles).

It's really overkill, but it's your car, your wallet, and your choice.

I'll see what it looks like after 7,000 kms at 8,000 kms on the odometer... Every 8,000 kms was well enough with the 1ZZ-FE for my type of severe service in dusty and Canadian extreme weather conditions.

Fuel dilution smell? This begs for a used oil analysis IMO.

Some fuel dilution, increased contamination levels, and some viscosity breakdown are to be expected from the original oil upon normal engine break-in... It will nonetheless be interesting to see when someone does produce a UOA from the M20A-FKS engine with D-4S fuel-injection system.

This is why I always change my oil at 1k miles on any new car. I've always believed that it's a good thing to do and can be done for under $30.

2nd oil change at 4,350 miles (7,000 kms) with filter change. That's 6,000 kms since 1st oil change at 1,000 without changing filter, and it was well due... It took 4.7 liters (4.97 US quarts) instead of 4.6 (4.86 US quarts) to be at the full mark.

This time with Mobil 1 Extended Performace 0W-20 and Denso 1502000 FTF oil filter.

I was going to say the same thing. Break in oil is never a good indication of what's going on.
