  1. 1999 LE 1.8 250k and new to me

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Oh, I dunno. Remembering back to cars of that era, longer highway legs? They revved a bit high with their four-speeds. But I can appreciate the simplicity of them. As for the multiple cars, I should have guessed. I used to have the same thing for motorcycles. But eventually was cured. :)
  2. 1999 LE 1.8 250k and new to me

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
OP, why do you have three cars?
  3. Oil Pan gasket vs sealer in a tube.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Thanks. Good to know gaskets work on these oil pans. I did already button mine up with the RTV, but next time I will try the gasket. I beat the hell out of my Corolla with a putty knife, chisel, and small crowbar getting the pan off this last time.
  4. Oil Pan gasket vs sealer in a tube.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
I believe the common approach to reinstalling the oil pan is to use sealer, no gasket. That is what I used the first time. But I noticed that Rockauto.com sells about four or five brands of oil pan gaskets. Why might that be? Actually, I had such a hard time getting the pan off after using the...
  5. We Are Now Live - Community Feedback

    Community Help
It seems odd that the newest post is not at the top of a forum by default, that the oldest is at the top. But what I really want to say is that, although the lack of useful search function is now missing, leaving the forum and simply googling.....ToyotaNation, 8th generation Corolla (or...
  6. Dash Rattle, Solved.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
I had a dash rattle from what I thought was the passenger side. Pulled glove box and all the peripheral stuff only to find nothing. I had the thought that maybe the airbag had some internal rattle. Me not knowing squat about airbag construction, I did not want to remove it. So I lived with the...
  7. YOUR compression test results at 155K-plus miles?

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
    Warm, but not super hot.
  8. YOUR compression test results at 155K-plus miles?

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
As the title says, I am interested in YOUR compression readings and mileage, if you have had no engine work done. My oil consumption is fair, about a quart in 3000 miles. But my compression test results across all four cylinders is 162-165 psig. Wet test on cylinder #4 (the only one I did it...
  9. Excessive oil use in 2002 Corolla

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
When I bought my 2001 Corolla about six months ago, it was going through a quart of oil every 300 miles. Now it is at 1600 miles from last oil change and has only lost a half quart. My car had a long carfax history of regular oil changes at Sears. Maybe they were even performed. Ha, ha. It...
  10. Replacing door hinge pins.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
As I got out of the car today, with the door open, I grabbed the top corner (furthest from hinges) and lifted the door up and released several times. It did seem to wiggle. I will replace the hinges first and then see if the latch needs to be moved. Thank you.
  11. Replacing door hinge pins.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Thank you. Good job! I was gazing at it yesterday and figured unbolting the door hinge from the door (or the car) might work best. After that, I MIGHT be able to get the short blade from my cheapo jigsaw in there, else I will just wrap a hacksaw blade in a towel and tediously saw through it...
  12. Replacing door hinge pins.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
I only found two threads on the topic here, and neither moved beyond an original post. I want to replace my door hinge pins on my driver side door. Door doesn't close properly and everything I have seen on the interweb says the hinge pins need replacing. My problem is that the Corolla (2001)...
  13. Maintaining a line--handling.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
I always hate it when forum members offer up lots of advice and the original poster never reports back, so here I am. I replaced all four end links. One seal on the left front was split and there did seem to be some play. All others did not seem bad. I wanted to use OEM, but in the end just...
  14. Maintaining a line--handling.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Thank you all. Things to consider/check. But a ton of rain in future and no cover of any kind. No lowering. Never. But DannoXYZ, you are the AFMer, yes? So you know what I mean by "not holding a line". I know nothing about cars so I can't relate it to motorcycles so well. I will do the...
  15. Maintaining a line--handling.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
My 01 Corolla, 153K miles, had obviously sagged on its suspension. I bought and installed new KYB struts. Just had alignment done. I'm very happy with it, mostly. But I did notice on this very long freeway entrance ramp, curved, downhill, that Corolla is like a poorly damped motorcycle. It...
  16. Trying to dislike the Corolla.

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Once again youtube suggested a video for me. And it isn't a bad one.
  17. Power Steering Reservoir Leak

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
I tried search and found but one post with no replies. My reservoir always seems to have fluid about the seam about midway down its side. The cap/dipstick does not seem particularly snug so I put some Glad wrap around it and the threading to see if that made a difference. Hard to tell. I...
  18. Crash Test Video

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Good point. The 1998 had some complaints of airbags failing to deploy. Just a minor thing.
  19. Honda vs Toyota ownership/maintenance

    Corolla Lounge
I figure odds are good that some of you own or have owned a Honda car. Many years of Fit production vs only a few somewhat troubled Matrix years, and a desire for a hatchback--are what have me looking. I was thinking of buying a first/second Gen Fit and was reading a bit on their forum. Some...
  20. Crash Test Video

    Corolla 8th Generation (1998-2002)
Afterwards, I found one of many others. This one shows how far they've come pretty dramatically.
