1. Car won't start - dead battery

Prius 1st Gen - Hybrid (1997-2003)
2001 Prius Hi folks, Our trusty 2001 Prius won't start. A multimeter shows about 5.5 V on the Optima battery. With the ignition key in the "On" position there is a weird noise coming from the relay box in the engine compartment. Nothing electrical of course works (headlights, horn). Should...
2. Power window stuck in down position

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Thanks for the info on the driver's switch - yes it just popped out. The switch checks out OK with a multimeter. Here's what I have so far: Driver's switch doesn't operate rear left window, up or down. No continuity from this switch to the junction post on the center pillar for window down...
3. Power window stuck in down position

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Thanks for that info. As usual with my electrical problems, this is getting weirder. I totally removed the wiring harness from the rear door. The wiring checks out OK with a multimeter. Then I found I'm not getting any electricity for WINDOW DOWN (red wire) from the junction box from the main...
4. Power window stuck in down position

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Ha! I understood what you meant - no worries. It worked a treat and now the window is closed - good thing, as we have rain tomorrow. To make a permanent fix to the broken wiring, I'm assuming I have to take off the trim to the center pillar (the post that separates the front and rear doors, so...
5. Power window stuck in down position

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Hi folks, This is a 1990 Camry DX 3FSE engine. I'm about to try something but I would like you guys to review first before I damage something. OK, this is the rear left window, which was left somewhere between down and up.. It didn't raise using either the master switch or the switch on the...
6. Is Old Faithful really dead?

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Oh, you mean like this :surprise: [/IMG] I fixed that and the car starts right up, purring like a kitten! I don't see how I can have missed that. Probably because i was looking for pistons and con-rods sticking out of the engine. Also, don't know what that thud was, except I...
7. Is Old Faithful really dead?

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
OK, I'm on it, Charlie. Now, what is this intake tube?
8. Is Old Faithful really dead?

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Charlie, Thanks for the reply. A quick deep thud like something heavy meeting something else equally heavy. No metallic screeching or anything like that. No choking - it died immediately. Finito. No fluids on the ground and nothing unusual in the engine bay or under the car, as best i can...
9. Is Old Faithful really dead?

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Old Faithful being our Camry DX (3FSE engine, automatic - bought new in 1990, now with 282k miles) This morning, I turned on the ignition to fire it up and there was a loud thud. Sounded like from the engine. I tried the key again and the engines runs, but only for 1 second and then...
10. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
OK, I really appreciate all the responses. I went back to AA - fortunately there was another counter guy. He checked out everything and came to the same conclusion - all OK. He suggested disconnecting the neg lead and see what happens. I'm starting out at 12.52V - we'll see over the next...
11. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
OK, the battery went from 12.24 to 12.04 V in 24 hours. Is that acceptable? Anyone know the minimum voltage required to crank the engine enough to start her up?
12. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
OK, thanks for the comment, CD. The readings are with the engine off.
13. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Dem, Thanks for the message. That solves why EFI is pulling a bit more juice. However, when the Dome fuse was pulled the drain actually went UP. I charged the battery up but then it only showed about 12.4 - isn't that a bit low?
14. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Now that is showing a normal battery drain, I think I'll monitor the battery voltage for a day or so to see what happens.
15. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
The guy at AA says my battery and alternator are fine, though the battery was a bit low. (Probably because I jumped started the car and only drove 7 miles to the store) Good news - I found a blown fuse (labeled Gauge in the left kick panel) It looked OK (no visible melting/breakage) but...
16. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Charlie, Thanks for the comment. I'll drive it out to Advance Auto and let them check the condition of the battery.
17. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Hmm. Not sure how to trace a short. Any suggestions for getting me started? Cheers
18. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
CD, Thanks for the reply and info. However, things have got weirder. The battery now drains, over several days, even with the 20 A fuse pulled. I put the 20 A fuse back and measured the drain (neg cable disconnected, multimeter connected between neg battery terminal and negative battery...
19. Voltage drain stops when 20A Dome fuse pulled

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
1990 Camry 3S-FE Deluxe The drain can be measured by using a multimeter between the (disconnected) negative battery lead and negative terminal of the battery. It measure about 0.4 amps. This goes down to 0.040 if the 20 Amp fuse is pulled from the "Dome" fuse holder. With the fuse pulled...
20. Spray distributor - car starts up again!

Camry 1st and 2nd Gen (1983-86) and (1987-91)
Alaricd, Sorry for the confusion! I've determined that spraying the distributor was a red herring and in fact it did not work on later stalls. I'm convinced that it was just a time factor. By the time I had got off to the side of the road, thought about the predictament, got the spray bottle...
