  1. Tundra idiling oil pressure

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
I'm glad you put numbers to it. This is extremely low compared to many other manufacturers, so that is why the hot idle oil pressure freaks out so many Toyota owners. Our T-100 was the same way from new, but the gauge did have lines for cold and hot pressures. The "idiot light" on many US or...
  2. Low MPG

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
I would not touch the IAC valve. Unless the idle is unstable, there is no influence on fuel economy. They are expensive and cleaning products can kill them. BACK TO BASICS. Does anyone even think of doing a compression check anymore? When you replace the plugs, do a compression check. That...
  3. Sold the '05

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
We sold the 2005 4WD regular cab over the weekend. There was nothing wrong with it, just too many vehicles and it wasnt being used enough (3000 miles last year). 1st gen Tundras are apparently in high demand in SoCal, as it sold within 12 hours of craigslist ad posting. We also have a 2000...
  4. 06 Toyota Tundra Better Mileage, any ideas?

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
The one part of this post that is absolutely legit is the Scangauge. I bought an Ultragauge (similar product) and used the mpg readout to modify my driving habits. Bingo! The noise created is energy wasted. I replaced the stock Bridgestones with same size General Grabber AT2. They are loud...
  5. 2015 Tundra

    Tundra 3rd Generation (2014+)
Where's the diesel? Ram 1500 is getting terrific real world mileage. You cant tell me that Toyota doesnt have a suitable diesel engine somewhere in the world that it can adapt to US emissions standards. Fiat/Ram did it.
  6. Right front wheel area bird chirping noise

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
Had same issue on '05 4x4. It was the lower bushing on the shock going bad, allowing metal to metal contact. Since I was still within my extended warranty, they replaced both front shocks, but if it wasnt a warranty job, I would have replaced just the bushings, with aftermarket if Toyota does...
  7. 2002 4x4 - How Does Transfer Case Work?

    RAV4 2nd Generation (2001-2005)
A friend just got a 2002 Rav4 4x4 without an owners manual. The one Toyota has online as pdf files makes no mention of how to operate the transfer case. The maintenance manual does specify GL-5 gear oil for both the transfer case and rear differential. This implies, to me at least, that it is...
  8. 2000 2WD Tire Replacement

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
Discount Tire (site sponsor) doesnt have anything under $100 in either size. Tirerack has several. I've got the General Grabber AT2, too aggressive, noisy and expensive for your application, but I have to deal with deep snow up here above 6000ft. General Grabber HTS, with a 640 treadwear...
  9. Should I buy an 06 Tundra?

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
NEGOTIATE! I paid $18,900 for my 2005 SR5 regular cab 4x4 NEW. Highway mileage is 15-17 fully loaded with a slide-in camper and 19-21 empty, but I keep it below 70mph. City varies a lot from 11-16.
  10. differences in Tundras

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
The '05-'06 had the most power and a 5-speed automatic. The brakes were upgraded in '03. Even with Toyota, never buy the first model year of a completely new design.
  11. 2000 2WD Tire Replacement

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
How much snow? How much noise are you willing to tolerate and what is your budget?
  12. When to Change Toyota Long Life Coolant?

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
There is a separate manual in the glove box in addition to the thick owners manual. It has all the factory recommended service. Dont trust the dealer service "advisor", since he is on commission. 2003 may have been the changeover mid-year from green to red coolant at Toyota, I dont know. But...
  13. 22 Mpg!

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
City driving gets me 16-17 and that is about 1/3 freeway. Still, the EPA estimate is 15/18. A year ago, loaded up with the slide-in camper and going 75mph on it only got 15. Slowing down has really helped. One of my main points is that no aftermarket accessory, such as loud exhaust or intake...
  14. 22 Mpg!

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
My gas mileage just keeps getting better. 22.5 mpg calculated the last fillup, and it was 21 on the last one. At 28,000 miles it should have been "broken in" a long time ago. This is a 2005 regular cab 4x4 (V-8, automatic, 3.9 axle), no synthetic oil, K&N or Flowmaster. The only variation from...
  15. Change your own oil in your V6 camry (DIY, pic intensive)

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
I'll buy Bosch if on sale at 2 for $6, or get Purolator for about $3 each at PepBoys. The last "deal" was five quarts of Formula Shell and ProLine (PepBoys brand made by Purolator) for $10. 3000 miles? Are you still falling for that nonsense from Iffy Lube and some dealers? 6 months or 5000...
  16. ProLine Oil Filter

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
Go to the Toyota dealer and take a close look at the current Denso filter. Compare it with the Proline. It appears to be identical. Does Toyota specify a super secret synthetic media. I seriously doubt it. The Japanese Denso filter that we can no longer get had a silicone anti-drainback valve...
  17. Help! No oil pressure...

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
What grade of oil? 20W-50 is not rated for 0F starting, but the normal 10W-30 should be fine. Even 15W-40 will pump, but straight 30 is solid at that temperature.
  18. tundra idles low then dies out

    Tundra 1st Generation (2000–2006)
It takes at least 30 minutes and/or 15 miles of driving for the computer to relearn the engine after a battery disonnect.
  19. 98 camry v6 oil change

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
Formula Shell, as in Shell V-power gasoline, you know, Royal Dutch Shell, the third biggest integrated oil company in the world. Shell Oil Products USA is the same company that makes Pennzoil and Quaker State. Shell branded oils are a lot more respected in aviation (Aeroshell), trucking...
  20. 98 camry v6 oil change

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
For those that have a Pepboys nearby, $10 for five quarts of Shell motor oil and a ProLine (made by Purolator, just like the Toyota dealer Denso) filter. No mail in rebate required.
