  1. 1998 Avalon XL P0171 P1153 P1133

    Avalon 1st Generation (1995-1999)
To some degree, it’s normal for greasy gunk to be pushed thru those tubes. This is blowby gases passing by the rings and down into the crankcase. That gas then passes up into the valve train area and into the intake to burn. Ages ago, engines just vented this gas into the air. So it’s a...
  2. 1998 Avalon XL P0171 P1153 P1133

    Avalon 1st Generation (1995-1999)
You are correct about that. From what you’re saying about the fuel trims, I suspect counterfeit O2 sensors are the problem.
  3. Brake pad support plates

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
I thought there were four different types of those clips? At least on my Camry and Avalon, there were. I just remove the old ones one at a time, find a match, and replace it. Then move on to the next.

  6. Head gasket...

    Sienna 2nd Generation (2004-2010)
A snapped timing belt doesn’t result in the radiator cap blowing and spilling out coolant.
  7. Power Steering Pump? 97 Camry

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. But you didn't mention it, and you'd be surprised what some people don't think to do. The pump whining you mentioned makes me suspect it's the pump. Mostly because the one on my Avalon (same pump) is barely audible. It was whining a couple years ago, which turned...
  8. What is this Light?

    RAV4 1st Generation (1994-2000)
It’s indicating a rear bulb is out. Sometimes it comes on when a bulb is walking wounded - nearly done, but the filament is hanging by a thread. Or the socket has some corrosion. Gotta take them all out and inspect them. Or sometimes the module that detects bad bulbs is on the fritz. I don’t...
  9. Head gasket...

    Sienna 2nd Generation (2004-2010)
If it happened that quickly and was immediately shut down as you described, chances are pretty good no serious damage was done. But only disassembly will reveal the facts. It’s true that steam pockets can cause a high temperature reading on the gauge. If a head is warped or cracked, a used one...
  10. 2000 Avalon "Cat not ready" last remaining smog snafu

    Avalon 2nd Generation (2000-2004)
What brand of O2 sensors were installed? Preferably Denso or OEM. Others, notably Bosch, don’t play well with Toyotas. Also, if Densos, where did you buy them? There are a lot of counterfeits out there that are garbage, especially on eBay and even Amazon. “Cleared the cel” = cleared the Check...
  11. Ended up stripping IAC valve screws (despite using JIS #2) - what are my options now?

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
I hope you have better luck, but I've never had any type of screw extractor work. Ever. Last resort: Use a dremel with a cut-off disk to saw the head off. Use the kind of disks that have fiberglass reinforcement.
  12. Power Steering Pump? 97 Camry

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
Dumb question: Is the power steering fluid reservoir adequately filled?

  14. 2005 Rav4 with 24k miles. Engine advice

    RAV4 2nd Generation (2001-2005)
Right, the '05 4 cyl is not prone to be an oil burner like the '06-'08's are. See the thread about it here. The V6 didn't have that prob.
  15. Hi TOYOTANATION I'm A New Member, My Name Is Lionel With a 2001 Toyota Camry CE 2.2L 4 Cylinder Rough Idle Start Up

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
Ah, good re the plugs and wires. Yeah, cleaning the IAC would be a good next step. Costs you almost nothing but some time. And it's a common source of idle problems.
  16. Hi TOYOTANATION I'm A New Member, My Name Is Lionel With a 2001 Toyota Camry CE 2.2L 4 Cylinder Rough Idle Start Up

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
I doubt the choice of motor oil brands has much to do with a rough idle on cold startups. Normally, I'd say you're changing oil too often, especially with synthetics, but this engine/year was in the Toyota sludge settlement, so what you're doing isn't a bad idea. How old are the plugs and...
  17. How common is it for mechanics to lose bolts or not tighten them?

    Camry 3rd and 4th Gen '92-'01, Solara '99-'03
This thread is a testament to why I do all my own work. 10 years ago, I used a shop that I trusted to do the more difficult jobs, but the owner retired. Since then, I do everything.
