On our '03 Corolla, there is a rattle sound coming from the engine compartment on the passenger side of the engine which appears to be coming from behind the engine mount, the passenger rear corner of the engine.

The car has been serviced at a dealer and had the "drive belt" replaced @ 41k. The vehicle is around 60k and has started within the last 10k but not gotten worse. I'm not familiar with this engine so hopefully someone has had this as well.

The noise is prevalent at all RPM's but mostly at idle and just above idle.

Anyone have any notes or tips on replacing the tensioner assembly? Are there any special tools necessary to replace the tensioner? I took a look at it and the area looks cramped....

No need to have the stealer do it if I can replace it myself...

replacing tensioner

Purchase the dayco belt and tensioner at rockauto.com

I decided to do a modified version of this I found on a matrix owners board
http://matrixowners.com/?showtopic=62886

Release the tension on the tensioner with a 19mm socket and remove the belt
http://www.scribd.com/doc/487911/2004-Toyota-Corolla-fan-and-generator-V-belt

remove bolts as per the matrix board procedure

removed the 3 15mm bolts off the motor mount bracket on the left side of
the engine.

Jack up the engine about two or three inches so I could get a 17mm with a brake bar on the bolt.
Remove bolt and 12 mm nut and remove tensioner

Install new tensioner and torque bolt 51lb and nut 21lbs ( torque spec is in the TSB)

Install new belt (this was fun !)

drop engine and reinstall motor mount bolts

good luck
