I have a 2003 Corolla S that has a ticking that I feel sounds like valve noise. It's very obvious when the engine is cold but fades significantly when the engine is warm. After manipulating the throttle to find out when the sound is loudest, I noticed that around 2,500-3,000 rpms with, say, 10-25% throttle is when it is most noticeable. With no throttle at those rpms it isn't audible and with heavy throttle, it seems to become much more quiet. I suspect that oil isn't getting to the valves but would appreciate some input and suggestions. Would an engine flush be appropriate in this situation? If so, any particular brand work best?

My 2003 Corolla S does the same ticking you spoke of, it took me a little while, but I found exactly were its coming from and after some research found it's normal. I spoke with a few different mechanics on this and they asked if I had an after market intake on it? I do.

I was told it is the VSV Vacuum switching valve. If you have an after market cold air intake like me it's even louder.

I found the Vacuum Switching Valve and put my hand on it, and you can actually feel the ticking.

I can get you a picture later of the location, then you can turn your engine on and put your hand on it and feel the ticking.

I have done the engine flush and run strictly Synthetic oil in my car.
