hey guys/gals. my girl has this 04 4runner that has been reliable for the past 2 years of ownership. until........
she came back from 2 months of training out of state. I was worried about the battery sitting for so long hooked up. unfortunately she took the only keys for it with her. otherwise i would of disconnected it for her.
it started up to my surprise but she started experiencing problems with it stalling. AAA came over and charged the battery and it was fine for a day. the next day it stalled again and we got a new battery installed. (the old battery was leaking acid)
with the new battery installed we thought it would be trouble free. it stalled again. she was able to drive it home, this time the CEL popped up. I checked it and I was given the P0717 input/turbine speed no signal.
I haven't driven it yet but the truck seems to be running fine, no slippage and its shifting gears fine.
I'm really baffled by this one. any ideas?

that was an interesting article, thanks! she's gonna get a tune up anyway. I don't think she's tuned it up since she bought it, so its gonna need it regardless. sometimes a simple tune up will work wonders. i'll let you guys know the results.

ok I we went ahead and replace the filter. that thing was in bad shape, i'm sure that will help with the stalling issue.
what I did noticed was the VSC/trac and ABS light was on. now would this be linked to my CEL? after doing some research on this site seems like loose/bad gas caps to Oxygen senors can trip the VSC.

Yes, those two lights are triggered by the CEL if I understand the system correctly. When a malfunction is detected that triggers the CEL, the ECU also disables any system that could add extra load to the engine, hence those lights come on.

How did you pull the code the first time, and did you reset after you pulled it? If so, check it again and see if it's the same code. If not, see if it can be reset.

I'd also recommend swapping the plugs if the filter looked that bad and checking the wiring while you're in there. And oddly, check the gas cap to see both if it's tight, and then remove it and check the seal on it and the mating surface on the filler neck to make sure there are no air leaks.

what you have said seems to make sense. the car stalled again after the air filter change. I'm gonna change the fuel filter next then take a look at those spark plugs. I'm a bit hesitant to change that Speed sensor in the transmission, its not a cheap sensor. but thats what the CEL is calling for. i'll have to see if my 03 tacoma has the same sensor and maybe we can do a temporary swap.

update the sensor wasn't compatible. i'm not too worried about the lights just worried about the stalling issue. she said it happens when she comes to a stop and then it cuts out. she's not able to start the truck immediately, she has to wait
approx 5 mins.

well she took it to the shop. they said it was the crankshaft position sensor. I don't know how they figured that one out. They put a new one in, and the truck is fine now. how I got that p0717 code beats me. cause thats a totally different sensor.
thanks guys for the quick replies!
