I have an 05 too and I have the same problem. There is also a coin stuck inside. I would love to know how to take it apart and fix the problem.

05 4runner rear armrest has retractable cup holder and tray. few months back had trouble closing cupholder now only comes out about half the way.
i know someone else has or had this trouble.

im srry to say that my cup holder has not had any problems yet.
