05 Corolla Rattle/Growl and Belt Squeal - Tensioner

My '05 Corolla started making a growling noise when first started and put in reverse(A/T) at around 33k miles. The sound is like the coolant resevoir or washer fluid resevoir is rattling against the frame or something. I took it to the dealer and he told me that it was the Belt Tensioner, and since I was past the 36 month mark it would be $370 to put a new one on. I told him I would live with it, and he told me that when the belt started squealing it would need attention. Low and behold - I now have 41K miles and it really rattles and the belt squeals! This was a gradual process that originally only happened for a few seconds when cold and would go away. Now the growl or rattle continues for 20-30 seconds and the belt squeal is non stop. I have owned Toyota's for 20+ years, and to me this is an embarrassment to them. I also believe it to be a "Drivetrain" issue because it obviously won't run long without the tensioner.
I called the 800 number and they wanted to know what I thought was an acceptable solution, so I explained why I thought it was a warranty item. So far I have no resolution at all. I did see a note about a TSB, and another guy got his tensioner replaced on his 03 well after the warranty, so I am going to follow up. It sounds like these tensioners have been a problem for quite a while, hard to believe they haven't addressed them.
4/10/08 Bought the $50 tensioner from AutoZone and a belt, and all rattles, growls, and squeals are gone. Took about an hour, didn't realize you have to unbolt the front motor mount and jack up the front of the engine to get the main tensioner bolt out - no big deal, just a floor jack with a 2X4 on the oil pan to raise the front of the engine enough to get the bolt above the frame rail.

I do not think that TSB applies to 05 corollas.
What year does the TSB apply to? Does it apply to '04 Corolla? Can anyone put the link for that one please? My car's been making the same noise. I am hoping its just the belt as my car has about 61K miles on it...
the TSB covers some 03-07 Corollas and Matrixs, it depends on the VIN. your car also has to be within the 36month/36,000mile standard warranty. I talked to one of the techs at my dealership and he also said that if you got an extended warranty then it should also be covered.
i learned that mine only rattles if it's in one of the foreward drive gears and when it's at idle (800rpm). do you think it's the tensioner or is it maybe a drivetrain issue?
It is likely the tensioner, mine is now also making the noise in drive. Most of the noises - rattle and belt squeal - quiet down from embarrasing to frustrating, after a couple miles down the road. It almost sounds like a diesel when I first start out. Please call Toyota directly if you have the same problem 800-331-4331 and let them know.
Everyones tensioner must be going at the same time!:ugh3:

I just changed mine last week and it solved all the noise problems!

My wife's '03 Corolla is on its second tensioner now, and at 55K miles it seems it is already ready for its third. The belt (also new) squeals like a pig all the time, and the car growls - until I read this thread I thought the growling was unrelated to the belt and tensioner.

Seems like NUMMI taught Toyota a thing or two from GM's book just as it taught GM about Toyota's manufacturing processes......
What does the rattling sound like when the tensioner is bad?

I just bought a 2007 Corolla LE. Of course, it's still under warranty, but I'd like to get some info before going back to the dealer, if that's even necessary. Only at idle, there's a tap/rattle from the engine. Sounds a lot like lifter noise, or a very quiet diesel engine. Rev the engine up any past idle, and the noise seems to go away, and the engine just purrs. Just bought it, 16,700 miles, oil is full, etc. Does that sound like the tensioner/pulley, or is it a different problem?

Thanks.

For me it sounded like a chattering mostly at first start up and then quieted down once the car heated up, I could also see my serpentine belt bouncing, I had a friend push on the top of the tensioner with a piece of wood while it was making that sound and the pressure made the sound go away, so I knew that was it!

They were suppose to replace the tensioner with a new "heavy duty" one starting on the 05's
Okay, thanks for your reply.

Bought it new, a 2006 Toyota Corolla and have been having the rattling noise on and off for a year after I had the car. Would only do it when I first started the car in the morning or when it was raining (I know, strange). Anyhow, the car started rattling constantly so I left it overnight with the dealer and they just called to tell me they would have replace the tensioner (covered under the platinum warranty) but the belt isn't covered under the platinum warranty. How convenient for this to get worse right after the 3/36K warranty wore off....thank goodness I bought the platinum warranty!!

I've always bought Honda's, this is my first...and last toyota. The electrical panel had to be replaced 12 months after buying this corolla and this current problem is just the icing on the cake. :headbang:
Replacing the tensioner should solve the problem; why do want to
replace the belts? Can you see visible damage?

They wanted to replace the belt because they said it was showing signs of wear and had cracks in it.

Just for the record and ta get some info on replacement, when u changed out the tensioner did u have to remove the front or passenger side engine mount to gain access to that main bolt on the tensioner? seems like u gotta raise up the engine for that bolt to clear the frame rail. any input would be helpful so I know how to go at it in the future:D

Taking the passenger side motor mount off and jacking the engine up is the text book way of doing it but I got it out without messing with the motor mounts, was a tight fit but with the right tools and help from my friend it wasn't that hard, key is a 17mm ratchet wrench. I think the tensioner cost me under $30 at Autozone! I bought the ratchet wrench there also, when I was finished I took it back! :saythat:

Was the OEM replacement tensioner too expensive? I would've gone that
route if you still had any warranty left. Even out of warranty I usually
try NAPA or O'reilly before Autozone. BTW, I always feel bad when I use a
store as a tool rental place. It's one thing to buy the wrong tool and need
to return it, but to walk in with the intent of 'renting' it is bad karma.:

I've owned my car since it was new and the tensioner I put on was the exact brand/match that I took off, I can't remember the exact name but it was a german made part, I even remember remarking to my friend about it because we matched all of the marking on it, so paying $30 at autozone compared to $50+ at the dealer for the same item is a no brainer!

As far as the tool, I don't believe in "bad karma" I believe that paying $15 for a tool that I might not use again for years is waste of good money, I only did this in a pinch, besides the wrench was as good as new when I returned it! Do what ever you thinks right but as for myself I don't need a preaching to :nono:
It's not just me 'preaching'--I suspect it's a violation of store policy to
buy something when you know up front that you're just going to return it.
If I walked into to Autozone and explained, "I'm going to buy this jack and
then return it because I won't have to pay anything and I won't need
it again for years!" I suspect they'd refuse to sell it to me. Of course,
you'd never mention that and probably get away with what you're doing,
but my point is that it's just basic bad manners to use a retail store for
free tool rental. If you give the store tons of business then it's a different
story, but I commented because you almost seemed proud of what you did.
