My 2005 Matrix runs great but is starting to get pretty high in miles (250,000). I started thinking about how much I love the Matrix but it has it's flaws.
I'm new to the forums/car modification. Sorry if I come of dumb haha

Currently I have the base model automatic 1ZZ-FE. I want to slowly build a 2ZZ engine in my garage and swap it in when the current engine fails. I'd also like to swap the transmission from automatic to the c60 6 speed transmission if possible. There are a lot of engine options. I feel like I'll have plenty of time to work on the engine so I should be able to buy parts slowly. I've seen JDM eBay motors, MWR blocks/heads, salvage titles.

I was thinking about starting with the block. I want to have Darton sleeves inserted, unless that is not a wise call. Eventually I'd like to run the 2.0L Stroker kit with a lower compression (9.0:1) and forced induction.

In short, what is the cheapest way to get a reliable block with Darton sleeves? Dhould i have them inserted at a mchine shop or buy them already installed from monkey wrench?

I'm looking forward to your responses. I've always wanted to build an engine and this seems like a good time to start. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.

do you have a 2nd car that you can rely on when you eventually do this swap that you are planning? because if not, you should add in the cost of buying and owning another car. For most people, an engine swap is not something that you can usually complete in just a weekend, there will be so many unforeseen complications, even despite having a well laid out plan.
You've either got to have a good amount of money laying around or a really good reason to want to do such a swap on such a high mileage and, let's face it, average car. If what you want is a faster car, then just go find a faster car and buy that. if you want a track toy, then find a miata or a crx, or a 240sx, or a 350z; all of these cars have arguably better suspension setups for track use than a corolla or matrix. Find a better starting platform with better aftermarket support.
But if you're dead set on it, then be prepared to spend more than the car is worth to do the swap you've planned and to have little return on that investment too. Or learn how to make your own custom parts, if you've got the facilities.

If you can stomach that advice then you'll probably make it further than most ever do.

Imo you may be better off selling that matrix and buying an xrs. Like the other member said, are you set on attempting to make a matrix "fast"?

I sold my 2004 Corolla S for a 2006 xrs. You'll most likely run into many issues. Cheaper to sell it and get the xrs and then build it up.

How are you enjoying the XRS? Would like to learn some more about the experience with driving / owning that vehicle.

I like the 2zz platform. When I got it, it was shy of 69k. PO drove it very conservatively and took care of it. Even did drl mod, aux cable mod, led bu lights, and blue LEDs in the map lights and trunk. I ended up removing the LEDs in the bu lights because the socket ears expanded and kept turning off.

Maintenance wise, it's had a few things done. Tensioner pulley bearing was making noise so I had that replaced by a mechanic. Did tranny fluid change at the same shop. I also installed speedsource bushings both on the shifter cable and the shifter base. Feels less sloppy.

From my research, the lift bolts should be changed as the 1st gen 2zz was made of weaker metal and would break. I think the interval is every 70k. I will check the owners manual and report back.

Things that need to be addressed in the future is VC, spark plugs, lift bolts, all fluid change, and another tensioner pulley. Clutch is going too, but I will wait for that.

For the transmission, there is yellow metal in the c60. Gl4 fluid is highly recommended.

It will last a very long time as long as you take good care of the car.

It would be cheaper to replace the S for an xrs rather than build the motor and then swap it since it's not a manual.
