05+ Tacoma Exhaust Overhaul

Hello,

I know a lot of the information I'm looking for is spread out across multiple threads, but I'm looking to pull a lot together and get some feedback since I'm not very experienced with exhaust systems...

I have an '06 4.0L Tacoma with the stock exhaust and am looking to upgrade it. Eventually, I'll want headers, and a new Cat-back system.

From what I've read and heard elsewhere, the TRD exhaust is not really highly recommended.

I've read great things about the Doug Thorly long tube headers. If I add the o2 sim, will it be likely to pass inspections? I don't live in California and I know if they look REALLY close, it would fail, but are people passing inspections with this setup?

Also, what would be a great recommendation for the cat-back system?

Basically, what would the "Dream Setup" be for a complete exhaust overhaul that would stand a reasonable chance of passing inspections?

Thanks!

I passed with the DT headers and Empire 02 sim.
what are your goals for your exhaust system? Do you want your truck to sound better? Do you want more power? How much do you want to spend?

Personally, if i wanted more power, i'd save my money and get the TRD supercharger installed and have over 300hp. If I wanted sound, i'd just replace my muffler, leave the :Bruce:if I had to pass emissions tests, and be done with it for under $100.

Did they stick your truck on a dyno, and check your emissions?

That's mostly what were worried about here Colorado.I guess I'll have to be a guinea pig eh?Hopefully the cats on the y-pipe a sufficient enough...If it fails, I still have my stock cats/manifold.
"The dream system" Is the Doug thorley Long tubes connected to dual muff's (50 series flowmasters) Side exits after the rear wheels. Someone has this setup here I just forget who. Dont forget the 02 sensor sim's. This is a Sweeeeet soud for the 4.0
I have a magnaflow cat back exhaust system for sale. The only reason I am selling it is because I want dual. It's an amazing exhust. I also have the Doug thorley long tube headers. The truck really sounds mean with the magnaflow and DT headers.

Would that be leaving in the stock Y-Pipe?

I was asked about my goals with upgrading the exhaust...

1) Increased HP
2) Increased Fuel economy, if possible
3) Don't care too much about the sound, but would be nice to get a meaty growl!!

4) Budget flexible, but like to keep it under $1500ish. Basically, just can't afford the supercharger, but wouldn't mind adding that to the truck in the distant future!!!

hehe....... saving that $1500 sure would make a good start in saving for the SC...... :) For now, just get sockmonkey to make you up a couple of ToyotaNation.com stickers.....that'll be good for at least 5hp.

The Doug Thorley headers are probably one of the best exhaust mods(that give the most horsepower gain). They also look nice! But you will need to get a different muffler. It's pretty raspy with the stock muffler.I went with a Jardine Cat back, and it sounds pretty good.

Ha! I'll consider the stickers and might also get my drill out. I could just put a bunch of "speed" holes all over the body to make it faster!!!

You're right that $1500 could be a great start on a SC savings account, but my thought is to do my upgrades in this order:

1) Fully upgrade / replace the exhaust
2) Add CAI
3) Distant future - add the SC on top of the exhaust and CAI...

I'll get there eventually, but the SC is going to take quite a while.

I like the idea of replacing the Y-Pipe, but still want some hope of passing emmissions and inspections.

Would it make any sense to do the Doug Thorley headers, leave the stock Y-Pipe and then some sort of Cat-back like JBA or some other one?

Would leaving the stock Y-Pipe just negate any improvements from new headers and cat-back?

I passed inspection with the dt headers and trd exhaust. If you think about it, when they put your truck on the lift the y-pipe cats are staring right at you. So most would just go on thinking that nothing is suspicious cat wise. If you remove the y-pipe and go with aftermarket you could be in for trouble. Plut I've heard the exhaust smell is very noticable which could raise a red flag.
You're right

Man, its not often I hear those words....... cuz I'm married!!!!

Ahhhh.... i was just wanting you to get the SC cuz those provide the most ":)/dollar"

I know the feeling as I'm married as well. That's part of the reason the SC isn't possible right now. I think if I spend $4000+ for the SC, then I would no longer be married!!

but it would SOOOOO be worth it!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhh...........

SC'r vs. wife. Hmmmmm

I think the next truck I purchase, if it doesn't have an optional 4.7L v8, I'll have the dealership install the SC before delivery!!!! sneaky sneaky!!!!!

back on topic..... there was a guy in Ocala that was selling his entire exhaust system off of his fathers truck.... his nickname was Dan**** I'll try to remember.... he had it in the for sale forum a couple of months ago... you might check that and It will save you some $$$$$
Here you go.... found it by searching a lil' bit. pm him, he's a cool guy and he may let you have his exhaust for a good price.
