Stumbled across this post as I had to pull the tank on my '03 since it's leaking and I have some bad news for you!! I had a '05 a couple years ago and I took it apart before sending it to the wrecker, kept a bunch of stuff knowing I'd probably buy another Corolla (had a '05 Matrix XRS as well). Plastic fuel tank and the straps being some of those parts. Well, apparently, Toyota changed the floor shape from '05 and up... The plastic tank "fits", but the pump is not lined up with the access hole above and the tank is against the floor, with the strap almost half an inch too far. Meaning that if you tighten it, you'll squeeze the tank a decent amount and over time, it could rub a hole in it. So... I have to look for an aftermarket tank or be dumb and go for a fuel cell since the car won't last 5 more years (no rockers, no pinch welds, rusted floors, trunk, etc).

Also... the evap system is different from 03-04 to 05 and up. My '03 has a vapor sensor on top of the pump housing, while the '05 tank doesn't. There's an extra vent on the '03 tank that meets the tube coming off the top of the pump housing going to the canister and it's much smaller. But wait, there's more... the '03 has a fresh air intake for the evap that connects to the air filter box up front, not present on the '05. So... there's a couple more tubes going to the canister and then you have to deal with a now disconnected vapor sensor. I believe it's part of the canister on the '05+, so it means another bad thing, the wiring is not the same.

I checked again tonight after coming home from work... What actually touch the floor and prevents the passenger side strap from sitting flush is the taller pump housing where the canister hose goes as it doesn't line up with the '03-04 access hole. Since it's a $600 winter beater that will meet its maker in 2-3 years max due to its state, I just badly cut a hole and will figure something as unprofessional to prevent water from getting in... You can actually see the now unused connecter (black) for the vapor sensor that's on the '03-'04 tank.

But at the end of the day, dealing with that + the evap wiring/tubing is simply not worth it. As for the evap system on mine, I'm pretty much planning on routing it so that it goes into the filter and get sucked in the engine (using a vacuum valve so it's only at WOT), for the sake of not venting to atmosphere. We don't have inspections or smog here, but I still have a bit of conscience. So on that last note, don't do it.

Seems you got it in, but I was gonna say the fuel pump assembly and fuel level assembly Was different and wouldn't read properly.

Due to this you also cannot properly swap gauges between 03-04 and 05-08.

The fuel level does not work with the '03 odometer and the '05 tank, but it's working fine with the '05 odometer installed. Since some of the wiring is different, the tire pressure light is on (my '05 CE did not have that option) and the air bag light is on. The wire colors and the pinout for the fuel pump and level sender are the same for the '03 and the '05 from what I've seen on TIS, but the sender itself is different. One reads on the potentiometer from the top when full to the bottom when empty and the other from the bottom when full to the top when empty. Since the wiring is the same, the difference would be in the cluster itself, either electronically or the needle's motor is inverted...

I took the odometer apart to take the chip out and try to reset it so that I have a functionning odometer (stuck at 299,999 obviously) and the fuel gauge is the first one I unbolted without marking it and noticing the orientation before it dropped... so I'll see if it's inverted or not. If I put it the wrong way in and it works fine, then I'll know. Otherwise I don't really care running the '05 cluster with the two lights on, I didn't check for codes yet, but like the tire pressure light, I'm pretty sure that since the wiring is different, they're getting ground from whatever is switched in the loom between '03 and '05. But again, it's a $600 car, I'd never do that if the car was clean and worth keeping.
