08 Tacoma 2.7L w/Auto a good combo?

Hello all, I'm in the market for a 2WD 2.7L Access cab. I will be deciding between a the manual transmission and the auto transmission. 80% of my driving is a one-hour, 20-miles-each-way urban commute (lots of start and stop). The other 20% is combo highway/city/dirt road/light hauling (no real offroad).

My main concern is that for the driving I do, the auto would seem to be the right choice, but I don't want to sacrifice anything in terms of power and reliability by not choosing the manual. Any comments?

sounds like a good combo with the auto !
i have the 5 lug 2.7 with the auto and have no troubles at all !

good transmission
does require tranny fluid change at i think it is 120K miles
and for the urban commute i am sure your left foot would say thank you

and no clutch to burn out ;-D

but just my 2 cents
Ditto ... '06 RC 2WD
Honestly with that much stop and go... you'll thank yourself for the auto. As much as I hate auto, the ONLY time I wish for it is in stop and go traffic. Thankfully I don't hit hardly any so manual for me.
Plus if you do any towing, you reduce the risk of burning up the clutch. However the gear hunting that has been mentioned time and time again would annoy me to no end.
The auto is great. Got my 08 RC auto, and has plenty of power. You won't be disappointed.
No more manual transmissions for me. Getting the AT was the best choice I made. It has one interesting feature: manual downshift from A(4th) to 3rd by pushing the shift lever to the left.
manual > auto

I got the manual in hopes of less to go wrong and just because I have never believed in 4 cyls with automatic. It turns out this truck has plenty of power for an automatic. With your commute I would go along with what everybody else has said.
In regard to which trans, the a/t sounds right for you since you mention a lot of stop and go. Been there done that myself for years in NJ traffic with manuals before and I wouldn't do it again.
Its a 165 hp 4 cyl...light clutch. Man up and get a manual
auto would prolly b better for wat your wanting to do

Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

dont criticise me...

I have an '07 RC 5-Lug 2.7 & (Auto) I run a swimming pool maint business, I put 100-120 miles +/- a day on my truck, I never broke it in like some of the Tacoma purist believe in doing. It came home with 20 miles on the clock, got loaded up with 600-800 lbs in the box and has had the gas pedal nearly glued to the floor board since then. I have 47K miles on the clock YTD and neither the 2.7 or the tranny has ever given me any issue. I also start & stop the truck frequently and it just takes the abuse. I would not get this truck with a manual. Anyone who says I'm not a real man, I gladly shift my '88 911 Porsche on the weekends :D and would rather not shift gears during the work week if that makes any sense.

I understand why you would get the auto, it makes sense for you since you start and stop a lot. I also personally disagree with anyone who calls anyone else anything for having either an auto or manual. I have a manual and specifically went out of my way to order one. I owned many autos and they are fine...just not nearly as fun in my 24 years of driving experience.

Drive on!
