After much patience (read: waiting for my wallet to catch up) I just bought an 04 prerunner, and I want to beef it up a little. I like the stock wheels, but I also like a slightly wider stance. Are wheel spacers a good option, or should I just pony up and save for some new wheels?

Anybody have a yota with spacers, or are they just an accident waiting to happen? Will they put undue stress on my bearings? Thanks guys.

are you looking at a slide on type of spacer or a spacer that bolts on? if its a slide on, anything over 1/4 of a inch will be a strain on your bolts and leave not a lot of thread for your lugnuts to grip too, leading to the possibility of a wheel coming off.
if you use a spacer that uses the existing studs to mount the spacer you should be pretty good. protrux carries them in 1.5 and 2 inch sizes, http://protrux.net/outfitter/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=33

if you have any concerns, i'd just get new wheels and not have to have the worry hanging over you. hope this helps.

ACID RAIN,

You are correct! By using spacers to just widen the stance, be aware that the farther out you position your wheels/tires the more load you will place on the wheel bearing. Spacers are usually intended to compensate for wheels with other than factory offset. Also, think about what this would do to your steering.
