22RE ENGINE

Hi there i bought two older yotas one is a 88 and ones a 87
to make long story short. I took the 22re motor out of the 87 and placed it in the 88 body now im having hesitation troubles when driving and shifting.. The motor idles ruff untill warm also then you give it gas ect then smoothes out at higher rpm in PARK.. But under load it seems i have no power unless i let off the gas abit and it gradually picks up rpm once the rpms is up the truck has good power and seems to drive well untill you change gears ,then it seems like the motor is fighting against it self ,, but if you rev it in park it seems ok ect... Am i having fuel pump pressure problems?

* when putting the motor in i took the wiring harness from the 87 and the computer too only thing i see different is the location of the oxygen sensor,
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreshiated.
.
AND YES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND I DONT KNOW HOW TO CHECK THE OBD DIAGNOSTICS system.. I cant find the terminal plug to check it..
one other thing is i unplugged the oxygen sensor it really didnt make a difference.. It may seemed to idle a bit smoother unpluged..

I also checked the vacuum advance in the distributer it seems to be working fine.. The only thing would be the mass air flow sensor that is still from the 88 and not from the 87 and by the looks of it does look quite bigger and different...

I know this may sounds confusing ect and a waste of time but im so close to getting this truck up and runnin good i can taste it
:)
See when im done i would have made one very good truck cheap with loads of parts for about 500 bucks which the body is mint so you see my point..

HELP lol

1st off did either motor run right before you swapped? or are you working with one or more unknowns?

Running rough cold could be one of the temp sensors the ECM uses or the cold start injectors.

Bogging under load could be fuel pressure (pump) or clogged fuel filter.

Wrong MAF could be a problem too.

Ok As far as i know the truck was suspose to run good ect but who knows...
Anyways i do know sat for years and it was dry seized but i got it unseized gently with diesil changed oil got it firing and running in park ok ect..
you know for a motor that sat for such long time it suressounds good and has decent oil pressure at the top .. So its just a matter of tinkering..
with it really...
OH yes i did subsitute one liter of oil with tranny fluid.. ok anyways

Thanks for the quick response i did change the fuel filter so its not that.

what im wondering is ok if took all the wiring from just the front end of 87 and the mass air flow housing ect.. will it hook up and be interchangeable with the wiring in the cab of the 88? Or will i have to do swap gauges fuse panel interior dash boards everything? i hope not lol

88 efi is not interchangeable with other years. The injectors run at different resistence, so the ecu, knock sensor, injectors and resistor is different. Do some searcing around in the toyota FAQ on pirate4x4.com. It has all the answers.

Oh ok well you see i do have efi manitofold and the injectors for the 88 toyota motor ,
but im not sure if i can swap the efi mainifold to the block of the 87?

I think before i start taking off manifolds and stuff im going to try just the wiring i do also have the ECU for both vehicles.. And can try them both if i have to..

Like dam the truck runs now its just hesitateing underload its seems like the gas pedal doesnt match the revs you give it gas under load no throttle response it gradually climbs up to proper rpms and drive ok as long as you keep the revs up.. Almost like bad fuel pressure..
or Advance timming is not working...

Anyways i really apreshiate your guys info..

According to this site:

http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/ar119838.htm

the changes are only on the shape of the exhaust ports (1981-84 & 1985-95) not intake.

I checked over my parts vehicle the numbers on the MASS AIR FLOW sensor they are exactly the same!!!..
So this makes me think why bother changing out the front wiring!!

Anyways when it warms up a bit outside i will swap it out..

Maybe thats whats wrong..

ITS DAM COLD IN MANITOBA MINUS 40 last night and 30 below with out the

PROBLEM SOLVED IT WAS THE TPS SENSOR "throttle positioning sensor"

I racked my brain for hours thinking trying different things just by luck i looked in the back of the donar trucks box

YEP in the donar truck box lies a completely torn down ripped apart 22re engine that i bought cheap that came with the truck from another weekend warrior mechanic that gave up on this little truck,, Quite sad if we all only really knew how many nice lil yotas meet this fate and then are hauled of to the junkyard to be crushed we would all cry :)

Ok back to point when digging around looking at all the nice spare parts i have for my 88 yota i seen the TPS ON THE side of the manifold intake and said to myself hopefully the part numbers are the same and they were ,,,
HMMMMMM Maybe this is what is wrong ??
SO i tore out the other one and put in on my truck,
The first time it never worked it ran worse!!! it was surging like crazy misfiring too!!
*When placing the tps sensor one has to becarefull how its is in stalled you can kinda put it in not right if your not careful and it will jam and not function properly
..And i did that the first time lesson learned.

So after starting it and hearing how crappy it sounded and ran comapired even to before a close friend that was there tryed to convince me it was the pistons and timing problems lol PROBLY SO HE COULD TRY TO BUY IT :)

anyways using comon sense i knew it wasnt that
it was something i just tryed to fix obviously in that area..
SO back to the drawing board. taking it out and examining the functioning of the unit i came to the conclusion it was not installed right,,So again and carefully installing it and presto

SUCESS UP AND RUNNING Way better than before AND NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT EITHER!!!

but Still not totally 1000% yet

I would like to know how to set the TPS like adjust it properly if anyone knows the right settings sure would help..

See the space in between the screws that hold the tps on the side of the mainfold .

What i want to know is how do you know if its set right?

*when taking off the old one i marked it ect but now this is from a different mainifold no marks to go by..

THE BLACK PLASTIC with blue writing and numbers under the hoses WITH THE SCREW IS TPS NOT ALL LOOK THE SAME ,
BUT IF THE NUMBERs ARE THE SAME THEY WILL WORK..
