Hey. I'm on here trying to help out a buddy. He has a '91 Tercel and its having some problems with acceleration. From a dead stop, acceleration is quite bogged down and all of a sudden power kicks in. As long as speed is maintained, there aren't any noticeable issues. We're in the process of trying to get it running a little better and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions. So far we've replaced timing belt, thermostat, air filter and spark plugs (he didn't want to do wires and distributor cap because its over $100 in parts but I know that might be the problem). Plugs are gapped properly. He says that the exhaust smells gassy on start up, and I did notice that the center two plugs when changed out seemed to have more gas on them than you'd expect to see. There was also an exhaust leak from the manifold which was due to two bolts being loose, but those have been tightened up (which consequently led to a much quieter ride!) Any suggestions on where to start? Easy cheap fixes are the first things I'm looking for as the car only cost him $100 to begin with, so he's not looking to spend much. The car did sit for about 6 months so I could see the fuel filter being a problem or bad gas (although its been run to empty 3 or 4 times now and filled up). We've run injector/carb cleaner through it a couple times now also. I think that about sums up the work we've done so far. Please help lead me in the right direction. Thanks!

Haven't done either. I'm a weekend mechanic so I'm learning as I go. I can check the distributor cap no problem. I looked it over but didn't really take notes on condition. I'll have to give it a serious check. As for timing, any good references on the process behind checking it? Thanks in advance.

My friend had a similar problem, and was tearing his hair out trying to figure it out..

The mechanic recommended a "cheap try" to fix the problem and I'll recommend it to you as well..

It seemed that 1 (or 2) of his fuel injectors was partially clogged, and so initially, pressure buildup wasn't enough so it just kind of dribbled gas in, but when at cruising speeds, the pressure was enough to get gas in..

True or not, who knows.. But he dumped I think 3 bottles of fuel injection cleaning in (1 each fillup..) and 3 tanks later, he said the problem was solved..

It's cheap enough to recommend as a "why the hell not" solution..

or why not just use one can/bottle of the absolute best crud out there? you could use a can of BG 401K and the CD stuff at the same time. or you could use RedLine SL-1.
