I am repairing a 1992 Celica GT w/2.2 litre I4. Just replaced the TPS. Now, it will ONLY idle. Any caressing of the accellerator, and the engine dies. Will idle smooth as glass for abt 5-10 minutes, then begin idling rough, and then die. Will not allow me to restart immediately after it dies. Must wait 10-15 minutes before restarting. When the vehicle is placed in gear, it will continue to run, but the moment the accel. is pressed, the engine dies.:headbang:
Any Ideas? I think part of it may be vaccuum-related..

oh, yeah, and...

...The "Check Engine" light IS on.
Checked the plugs, regapped/replaced, distributor appears new (cap & rotor)
...is a small, mushroom-shaped valve or sensor with 3 vacuum tubes coming out of it. It is located above the valve-cover on the firewall. 1 of the tubes has broken off (with the nipple). What is this valve? Could this be part of the problem?
....help, PLEASE!!!:headbang:

that's a weird issue. have you tried the vacuum sensor ?
also try to test fuel pressure. maybe the fuel isn't getting there easily (faulty pump, pressure regulator or simply a clogged fuel filter)
The filters on these are huge and pumps are very reliable. but everything is possible on a 20 year old car.
by ''putting car in gear'', i assume its an auto tranny ?

...However there's a NEW development...

Bro,
Appreciate the reply. Yes, it's an auto tranny. Sorry for the oversight.
I (today) reset the computer and put a new fuel filter in. It ran fine for abt 5 miles. Engine started surging, and then shut off at an intersection. Restarted. Drove abt 40 feet. Engine started running VERY rough. Quit. I restarted, ran rough, started smoking....briefly. Quit. Refused to restart. Will try again tomorrow.
Ideas?
-Thanks in advance, bro...

Check map ( manifold absolute pressure sensor ). or just unplug it to test. with it unplugged engine will idle erratically but be very drivable.
Then check fuel pressure, maybe pressure is very low ( maybe faulty pressure regulator due to crap gettin in there ) ? i just hope for you the injectors arent clogged up...
no prob for the answers. i learn every day also when i see the cause of the problems :)
