I have a 1993 4x4 3.0 6 cyl. extended cab i just got a few days ago. it was not running when i got it and I took it to a shop and they determined the neutral safety switch wires were plugged in wrong??? the truck ran for two days then left me stranded in the cold. I am new and this is my first toyota. I am from tucson and stranded in iowa and I am ready to drive my new truck home.

the truck was hard to start and I was shifting from park to neutral to get it to start and then i found if i slid it just a little south of park it would start but now nothing. i can hear loud a loud click from near the starter area and also the relays in the top passenger engine compartment. there is no turn over of the starter or the motor.

i did a search and as far as i can tell the possible remedy is to check for good connection and strong battery.

Does anyone else have any really good ideas? the mechanic i took it to (real small town) said he had no interest in changing the starter ( couldnt really see how to get into get it out) and i would have to have the truck towed at least 30-50 miles to get it to a toyota dealer.

thanks for the help, this looks like a real good forum!

The "click" is a classic case of burnt out starter contacts.

Good news: they are very cheap to replace
Bad new: you do have to pull the starter

My best advise for you (if you want to do it yourself) Is to get a few long extensions for your rachet. A few of the starter bolts are easy to get from behind the engine (lay under the tranny area). Also some guys have had sucsess by removing the passenger side wheel and slash gaurd, this is supposed to give you room to get at the starter. I have not needed to do this yet so I cannot comment on it.

thanks so much for the help. took the truck to a different mechanic and they checked the wiring, the neutral safety switch... everything looked good. pulled the starter and put in a new one from o'rilleys (against advice to just switch the selonoids) and according to the mechanic, she starts just fine. heading hom e for arizona with my new truck tomorrow!!!
