Okay, first off, Hello to all. I will get to the point. My 1996, 4 cylinder Camry fuel gauge works when you fill it up and then recedes until about half way. It will slowly move around and at times still seems like its working, but not right, and then it will move back up a little.
Does this dude have a float or some type of electronic reading device?

Maybe I should have been more clear in my initial statements. I understand the laws of gravity. Is the common fix for a janky gas gauge to replace the whole unit, sending unit, or float? Does it have an electronic reader on the tank. Ground wires a problem?

In this thread, scroll down to the 4th pic, which shows a float-type sending unit attached to the fuel pump assembly.

Yeah I'd check the float attached to the fuel level sensor in the gas tank and see if its taking in gasoline. It may have a hole or crack in it somewhere allowing it to take in fuel and sink, which would make you read lower than normal or just read empy most of the time.
