I have been experiencing troubles with my 1996 Celica air conditioning. Replaced my compressor, receiver, evaporator, compressor speed sensor, and eventually the shop said it was a bad amplifier. The dealer said that part is obsolete and cannot be ordered. The shop went to a pick and pull and got the A/C working, $690 later! When I picked it up still no cold air! Any suggestions, short of re-wiring A/C to a toggle switch?

Hello there, I just rejoined the forum. I have a '92 Celica convertible GT. I had issues with my AC for the last year. I replaced everything as well. I got lucky and was able to order one of the last three available AC amplifier thru my dealer. The cost was only $115, and $85 to install. I had their mechanic install and he also cleaned the evaporator coils as well. Well, the AC worked initially right away. But at various times later, it didn't work right away. I noticed that it seemed to work if the engine was warmed up rather than cold. So far its been about 7 months and its working consistently, but I am still a little hesitant sometimes when I switch it on. I would say it is about 97% reliable in my view. How is your idle performing? Is it constant? That was one of the things I noticed also when the AC didn't work right away.
