I recently picked up a 1998 Rav4. When I purchased the AC did not blow cold. Being a "cheap" car I didn't want to initially sink a lot of money into it, so I charged it up using a hose/gauge from Walmart and a couple of cans of r134a.

At idle and ~85 temps I have ~25-28 psi on the low side. . The vent temp at idle, max cool, high fan, recirculate goes down to 40-42 degrees.

Whether at idle or driving the temp fluctuates once it gets down to 40-42 degrees. It slowly rises to 48 degrees then slowly drops back down over and over.

I assume this is the compressor cycling off and on?

Is this normal? How often should it be cycling with max cool, high fan, recirculate with 85 degree ambient temps?

Thanks in advance. I know this isn't the proper way to recharg/ diagnose but budget is a concern with a second car that is 14 years old.

Anyone?

Just wondering about the cycling issue. On recirculate, max cool, fan high going down road it cycles regularly when cooled down.

I'm guessing 15-20 on, then off for 5.

Stays on much longer during initial cool down or not on recirculate.

Normal?
