1998 Rav4 Seatbelt Light

The seatbelt warning indicator on the dash has been blinking for months---Now I'd like to eliminate the distraction---is there an easy way to do this? Will I be taking a chance that I could deploy the air bag while I do this? Thanks for any help.

buckle your seatbelt and the light should go off if everything is working properly
Right---let me supply more info. First, I always use the seatbelt; secondly, this started out going on/off intermittently then eventually, always on (flashing). This happens with the seatbelt on.

It's a fairly common problem.
Will it go out while wearing the belt but pulling out more belt?
Chances are it's the switch located in the retractor that's in the the door pillar behind the molding. Remove the white plug to disable the light ... it's not the fix otherwise you have to replace the whole retractor.
Hope this helps.

Yes---at one point it did go off, if while wearing the belt, you gave a good yank maybe one to three times. Now, however, it's on with the best buckled no matter what you do. I was told that if you remove that harness you should jumper across it? Does this make any difference? Should I bother? Thanks for all the help to everyone, by the way!
Blinking seat belt light solved

The tip tp unplug the white plug worked. In the past I've been able to reset that sensor by pulling and retracting the belt numerous times (while being completely strapped in.

This time, when it "hiccuped" and started blinking while I was wearing the belt, nothing seemed to be able to reset the sensor, so I popped the molding off and unplugged the white plug as suggested. Problem solved. Thanks for the tip.

PS, I even went to far as to let it "sit", then plugging the white plug back in to see if that might not reset the sensor, but got no joy there.

Can somebody tell me if this applies to the 2000 model also? I'm having the same problem.
Saw this thread on Friday and after a year of watching this stupid light flash, mine's finally off. And it only took about ten minutes. Thanks.
THIS THREAD MUST BE REVIVED!
It is still helping 14 YEARS later!!
