The 4 cylinder 4runner is under powered, but more comfortable than a Taco. But if you have the money and you are looking to buy I would look at the 98' and above with the 3.4L v6. A very good motor and very reliable. The first 2 years of the 3.4 are not as reliable. Some have had head gasket issues, but not as bad as the 3.0L v-6. The 3.0L v-6 if properly redone is a good rig. If you can't afford the 98' try to find a 3.0L that has had the Toytoa repaired head gaskets. And if you are real lucky you can find one that has had the crossover exhaust pipe removed and headers installed. This plays a major part with the issue of the head gaskets. It takes away the heat that is produced by the crossover that causes the #6 area of the head gasket to burn and fail. Hope this helps.

Very possible. You'd think the 4 banger would edge it a little with a manual though.

Thans for the information. I know about the head gaskets going bad on the v6 just wondering if the 4cyl is just as good as the 22re. I dont care about the power its just a back and forth to work truck but it has to be a 5spd I hate autos. I may put 4 runner seats in the pickup to see if it helps if I dont find a good 4 runner.

I don't think that the standard cab is as comfy as an extended cab. Maybe an extended cab model might do you right? I ride sometimes with a friend of mine that owns a 4 door model, but for me it does not have the leg room even though you have the room to bring the seat all the way back. The 4runner seems to have just a bit more leg room. And for a daily driver I like that..... I don't think that you could go wrong with the 4 cylinder engine. Toyota makes a great 4 cylinder engine. You have to remember that the 4runner is a heavy rig and the more power the better in this case. I own/have owned 4runners with the 22re, 3.0 3.4 and the 4.7. The 22re is about 16-18 mpg, the 3.0 is about 18-20 mpg, the 3.4 is about 18-21 mpg and the 4.7 is about 19-24 mpg. Hope this helps.

I took me a year to find a pickup in good shape. All the ones I saw were rusted out. I found the 4x2 standard cab 5spd no rust with 131k for 2200. I wanted an extended cab but they were over 3500 with rusted out beds and to many miles. I had this truck for 3 years but threw my back out 2 years ago and it just has been getting unconfortable to drive.
