Hi
I have a 1999 corolla ce that wont start. it has an auto trans and 130,000 miles on it. The car sat for two days and when i went to start it, it will turn over but not run. It is getting spark as well as fuel (the plugs are wet and smell of gas). When i try to start it the check engine light as well as the oil and bat light come on but when i scan it, it is throwing no codes. Any ideas? I had thought maybe a clogged fuel filter but it seems like that would throw some kind of code. The car has been running well up to this point. I drive it 100 miles a day, 5 days a week. Thanks

Does it even try to catch and run? How did you check for spark? Fuel seems OK, if the plugs are getting wet. Did you try starting with the accelerator held to the floor (to clear a gas flooded engine)?

Could be a number of things - bad fuel, intermittent ignition, throttlebody issue, ECM problem, timing issue, any number of sensors that are damaged (camshaft position, crankshaft position), etc.

It does try to catch and run. I checked for spark by holding the sparkplug on the valve cover while someone else tried starting it. I could see a steady strong looking spark. I tried starting with the pedal to the floor. I also tried using starting fluid because i figured if it wasnt getting fuel this would start it for a moment. The gas tank has about 3/4 left so i have driven around 75-100 miles on this tank already. I go through a tank of gas every 3 days from the same gas station so i wouldnt think it would be bad gas but you never know. I was hoping some sensor would tell me something when i scanned it. Whats the next thing i should check?

No ideas anyone? I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this problem. When I cranked it for about 30 seconds today it sounded like it wanted to start but didn't. The only thing I haven't verified for sure is fuel. The plugs are wet with fuel and the tailpipe smells like fuel after I have been trying to start it. Also I figured spraying starting fluid would fire it for at least a second if it wasn't getting fuel. I would think if the ECM was funky that the scanner wouldn't connect to the car at all. I was thinking about disconnecting something obvious to see if it would throw a code for that. I'm just kind of running out of ideas

Have you checked the timing chain? If the tensioner is failing it may have slipped a tooth or two and your timing could be off by enough that you're not getting spark at the right time.
