I have an '04 Camry with auto trans that has developed a whine in 1st gear, not noticeable in the higher gears. Is this normal and nothing to be concerned about or is corrective action needed. I have searched other threads but none with this particular issue. I have 50,000 miles and the trans has not been serviced other than checking for normal fluid level and color/smell.

Depending on your car's in service date, If there is a problem, it may be covered under your powertrain warranty. Take it to the dealer and find out if your car has been in service for more than 5 years, if not, have them inspect and fix it. Report back and let us know what they find.

definately get it looked out especally if its still under warranty. if you think there is a problem keep on Toyota till its resolved. I just had my gearbox fail 6 months outside of warranty, toyota wouldnt cover it even though I complained to them about it while the car was still under warranty. A rebuilt exchanged transmission is $3400 +tax from the dealer. Just had a local tranny shop do it and it was $2400 + tax. get it looked at before you have to pay.

This is definitely NOT normal, especially if you never heard the sound before and your mileage is very low.

Do you drive you car hard and possibly damaged the tranny? Or stuck in snow/muddy conditions, where you had to rock your car back and forth. If you maintained your car and drove it with reasonable care, it must be a defect.

A trip to the Toyota dealer this morning turned out well. A mechanic rode with me and said what he heard was not unusual for the transmission and was not a concern. He did recommend a drain and fill even though the fluid was supposed to last for 100,000 miles. I will be looking for some type IV fluid.

Really? so something must have changed. If you never heard it before, why would it be doing it now? What was his answer to that? Why is there whining sound now?

I had a GTI a long time ago and when one of the gears broke (the reverse gear in this case), it made a whining noise when i reversed. I hope it's nothing like that.

Thanks for the responses. The car was driven daily by my wife and she told me the transmission whine was always there in first gear. I have drained and filled the trans twice now with Toyota type IV fluid. Hopefully the noise will not increase.

You should be changing you trans fluid at 30k to 40 k not 100k only from 2007 the Camry's are now using a semi synthetic trans fluid and it should be changed at 40k they found that the oil is pretty dark at 40k. I have a 2006 Camry and use mobile one synthetic trans fluid in the trans and power steering and change it every 30k my 1986 Toyota Cressida went 529,000 on the same motor trans rear end power steering even the A/C sys using mobile 1 synthetic products. My 1991 Lexus LS 400 now has over 300k using mobile 1 products and everything is original take care of your Camry and it is possible to get 300k or more out of it. You take care of your Camry and it will take care of you.

If the darkness of the fluid comes from anything other than the clutches, you have other major problems. Not that I like dark fluid from just the clutches but if no other issue, the dark fluid will not harm the trans. It's like motor oil, the additives wear out over time.

Try replacing the felt filter too. When that thing plugs up the transmission will begin to slip. There were some pictures of a U151E pan drop a few days ago, but 4-cyl similar:

Maybe Toyota's U-series transmissions have looser production tolerance, but I don't think whining transmissions can be considered normal.

Well, this is an old necro-thread, but I found this thread while trying to investigate a first-gear whine or "whoosh" sound on my new-to-me 2010 Corolla LE (with I believe a 4s auto transmission).
I have so far drained and filled three quarts using Castrol's new ATF/CVT Universal fluid that is WS-compatible, I test-drove it again with no noticeable change in the sound, and have since changed out another three quarts (but without yet taking another test-drive).
The noise is in first gear only and the car has 165k miles on it.
I'm trying to get some idea of how many of these cars do this(?).

Yes it's running fine, no change in the noise other than a slight decrease in the sound after several 3-quart fluid exchanges almost two years and 27k miles ago (now at about 193k miles).
I sense that this is no concern at this point.
This car does reside in a hilly area for what that's worth, and had never had it's fluid replaced until 165k miles.
