engine:STOCK..can the 2.2 be turboed with out bottom end rebuild? Also what after market products do you guys suggest to encrease hp, besides turbo.

you *can* turbo the 5SFE, but it's generally regarded as a bad idea. they like to pop with very little amounts of boost. what are your goals for the car?

autox/roadcourse/canyons: suspension and brakes. a well sorted 5SFE can run with 3SGTEs easily in the twisties.

drag: 3SGTE swap. so much easier to make power with a 3S than a 5S.

No specific application in mind. Street car but want a little more "oompff"...have found a ton of aftermarket suspension pieces which I am looking into. I own a transmission shop, so mods/upgrades are not a problem on engine and/or tranny but where to start? I would just as soon not do the turboed engine swap as this is a "project car" with my wife watching the purse strings VERY closely.

As for "twisties"..well I am in central Texas..all flat and straight..round here a 3 mile bend in the highway that takes you 2 degrees off course is considered a hair pin turn.

if you're planning on not doing a swap, it's probably best to do exhaust (including header), cams, EMS. intakes don't do much on an otherwise stock 5SFE. the factory cams aren't designed for revs, which is pretty much a requirement to make any decent power in a 2.2L n/a engine. once the cams (add headwork and oversized valves to help things out a bit) are done, you'll need the EMS to increase rev limit, and take care of the fuel and ignition maps. that's just a start. :)

FWIW, the power that most people get out of a 5SFE are eclipsed by a stock 3SGTE with a boost controller. not knocking it, but if you want more power, a swap really is the best way.

If you are lookin to give your car a little more power without taking a chance they are tellin you it all... the cam is very important to get done as well as exhaust, header, pullies, flywheel and if you really want to the turbo but you are lookin to fix up alot of other things as soon as the turbo hits the car... but i have been told from many many people that drive mr2's that if you have a car that is takin car of the way that the mr2's should be takin care of you are able to get a little over 350 hp before having to pull apart and replace many of the internals...

ok..well it looks like I have a head gasket leak anyway..judging from the 2 teaspoons or so of oil I sucked out of the area where the number 2 sparkplug sits. So a top end rebuild is in the works anyway.

Thanks for all the info guys.

that's only true of the 3SGTE. the 5SFE does not take well to boost. also, the weak link in the stock 3SGTE are the pistons. the OEM 3SGTE rods and crank have held over 500hp. the 5SFE has a good crank, but the pistons and rods are weak.
