Got a 2.4 with a little over 100k miles. Cranks but doesnt start. Acts like one or two cylinders fire briefly, but mostly just cranks and cranks. Have fuel and spark. Did a compression test today and the results were 88, 100, 78, 130 for cylinders 1 thru 4. I know it could need a head job or the chain could've skipped. Anyone else have had this issue and if so, what was the exact fix? would a jumped chain cause a complete no-start condition?

Change oil and filter and use 15w40

Remove spark plugs, and use an eye dropper to add 15 drops of oil into the cylinder

Button it up and see what happens
Can you elaborate on what this test does?

If the engine starts and runs a bit with the oil in the cylinders, will that mean its a compression (head) issue and not a timing issue? therefore narrowing it down?

Vehicle history? Was the car sitting for a long time? Did you just buy it? Overheat? Was the car running great and then this suddenly happen for no reason? Are you sure your compression test is valid? Test another car to validate tester

Here is a video. This is while cranking with key on "start"

Car isnt mine. Im told it was was being driven frequently. One morning it didnt start. After that it sat for about two months until I went to check it. Battery was shot and there was no power anywhere, so I installed a new one. That is when it actually started, although it was running very rough. At this point I thought the battery was the only problem and the engine would smooth out after a few minutes. But then it started to make a lot of (what sounded like engine) noise, and eventually it died and would not start again. Just crank and crank. Then I had it towed to my residence for further testing

Although it has a small coolant leak at the pipe under the exhaust manifold, it has not overheated, from what I'm being told. Oil doesnt look contaminated and the reservoir is full of coolant. Compression tester is a Snap-On and working good. I tested a 2007 Scion TC with 260k miles with the same tester, and all cylinders showed about 150 PSI
